About this role

Job summary

The SLAM Staff Counselling and Wellbeing Service is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated psychological therapist who is committed to providing evidence based interventions for SLAM employees accessing the Staff Counselling and Wellbeing Service. We welcome applications from those who have interest and experience working within staff support.

The post-holder will work within the Staff Counselling and Wellbeing team providing psychological assessment and evidence-based treatment for staff members experiencing depression and/or anxiety or other common mental health problems arising from, and impacting, their role within the Trust.

An understanding of work related stressors and the wider staff support offers across South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, along with a knowledge of Occupational Health, Employee Assistance and Employee Relations processes would be an advantage.

Main duties of the job

You will provide specialist psychological assessments, formulations and interventions for staff members presenting with anxiety, depression and other common mental health needs arising from, and impacting their roles within the Trust. You will participate in the screening and triage of referrals as required and agreeing effective and meaningful treatment pathways ensuring accessibility for all staff within the trust. There is also the opportunity to provide trauma focused interventions with the SLaM Post Incident Pathway.

The Staff Counselling and Wellbeing Service is a unique and specialist staff facing psychological therapy service provided by SLaM for anyone working in SLaM. The small friendly team consists of experienced psychologists, CBT therapists, counsellors and a psychiatrist who are passionate, knowledgeable and experienced in supporting staff within NHS settings. The service is dedicated to providing confidential, timely and responsive evidence based therapies for staff.The Staff Counselling and Wellbeing Service works alongside the Staff Support Service and sits within Corporate Psychology and Psychotherapy.

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential)

Entry-level qualification in applied psychological therapy/mental health/social welfare profession or equivalent and demonstrable practice in this field (professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level/supervised practice/additional training) that has been accepted for the purposes of professional registration.

For Psychologists: Entry-level qualification in Applied Psychology (professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level additional training) that has been accepted by the HCPC for purposes of professional registration.

For Psychotherapists: Entry-level qualification in Psychotherapy that has been accepted by the UKCP/BACP/BABCP for purposes of professional registration.

Registered with professional body as appropriate to discipline HCPC/UKCP/BACP/BABCP

Qualifications (Desirable)

Qualification in EMDR

Experience [Essential requirements]

Experience of receiving clinical supervision across a range of client needs.

Experience of assessment and treatment of NHS staff with a range of psychological needs within a staff support environment or equivalent.

Significant post-qualification/graduation experience including experience of individual therapy with people with common mental health needs.

Experience of working with a broad range of NHS staff.

Experience of working with issues of risk and safety both physical and relational.

Experience of multi-disciplinary working.

Experience of providing supervision to junior colleagues.

Experience of working with, and addressing issues of, diversity, including experience of working within a multicultural framework.

Experience of working within staff support services.

Theoretical knowledge of psychopathology and the evidence base for the relevant treatment of NHS staff working within South London & Maudsley NHS Trust.

Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health issues, child and adult protection, and equalities.

Knowledge on how to deliver psychological/psychotherapeutic therapy across cultural and other differences.

Knowledge of a range of therapeutic ideas/approaches and models in assessment and treatment relevant to discipline

Knowledge of racial and other diversity issues and factors affecting access to mental health care.

Skills [Essential]

To plan and schedule assessment and interventions for individual clients with consideration for the needs of staff working within SLAM.

To select and administer specialist assessments, interpreting and integrating complex data that require analysis, interpretation and comparison, drawn from several sources.
