Job summary

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and dedicated Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP) to join the Shropshire Bowel Cancer Screening Centre.

The successful candidate will be primarily based at William Farr House but will be required to work regularly across the service's additional screening sites at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital in Telford. The service currently operates six days a week, Monday to Saturday, with the potential to expand to a seven-day service as the programme develops.

You will become part of an established, supportive, and highly professional team committed to delivering high-quality care to all screening participants.

The post holder will work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure the effective delivery of the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, maintaining high clinical standards and contributing to continuous service improvement.

Main duties of the job

Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and as an autonomous practitioner, managing caseload of patients within the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. Undertake nurse-led clinics, including patient assessment, provision of information, and supporting individuals preparing for endoscopic and radiological investigations. Provide high-quality, patient-centred care. Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and colleagues, including the delivery of sensitive and complex information such as breaking significant news. Collaborate closely with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated and seamless care across all stages of the screening process. Contribute to achieving Trust objectives, as well as local and national targets set by the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. Accurately record and maintain patient data using the national Bowel Cancer Screening IT system. Undertake and successfully complete all required trainings Participate in ongoing professional development, supported by in-house training, supervision, and mentorship to meet the requirements of the role. Maintain and develop knowledge and skills relevant to the role, with desirable exposure to areas such as screening, gastroenterology, endoscopy, pre-assessment, or oncology. Demonstrate strong IT skills, ensuring timely and accurate data entry and effective use of digital systems.

About us

The Shropshire Bowel Cancer Screening Centre is a well-established and supportive service, delivering the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin since 2009.

You will be joining a dedicated and experienced team comprising a Programme Manager, Lead Specialist Screening Practitioner, 12 Specialist Screening Practitioners, a Health Improvement Practitioner, a Programme Co-ordinator, and 5 Admin and Clerical Officers.

Professional / technical qualifications Essential
