About this role
This Surface Landman role will dedicate their time supporting the company's surface land and surface planning efforts. This position requires you to perform at a high level working both independently and collaboratively within the Land team and other disciplines across the organization. The ideal candidate is well organized, detail-oriented, flexible, and able to balance multiple priorities at the same time. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants a dynamic role supporting field operations, landowner relationships, permitting, water logistics, and surface development planning.
Responsibilities:
• Secure and manage surface-related agreements, including rights-of-way, water well use agreements, surface use agreements, temporary access agreements, damage releases, pipeline route agreements, booster pump agreements, and other agreements needed to support field operations.
• Administer surface-related payments to landowners, including payments for water purchases, surface damages, temporary rights-of-way, and other contractual obligations.
• Secure county, floodplain, FAA, TXDOT, and other required permits for surface locations, right-of-way intrusions, road and entrance use, water transfers, pipelines, drilling and workover rigs, and related field activity.
• Represent Magnolia in communications with landowners and resolve issues related to field operations, including access, noise, road repairs, gate usage, fence maintenance, cleanup procedures, surface damages, and other operational impacts.
• Coordinate with Houston Landmen, field foremen, and operations teams to support landowner notifications, access needs, lease obligations, surface use, operational timelines, and repairs to roads, gates, fences, creek crossings, and other surface damages.
• Support plugging, workover, drilling, completion, production, and facility operations by securing access, coordinating landowner communications, and helping resolve surface-related issues in a timely and professional manner.
• Assist with surface planning by identifying potential surface sites, supporting the staking process, and helping ensure site access and locations meet specifications for drilling, completion, production, and facility operations.
• Plan and route water transfers, including water source evaluation, booster pump staging, access coordination, water volume tracking, and compliance with applicable water use agreements and contractual obligations.
• Coordinate with surveyors, construction contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and internal teams to support timely construction of surface locations, access roads, pipelines, water sources, storage systems, and related infrastructure.
• Provide coverage for related surface land and surface planning responsibilities as needed during absences, workload changes, or other operational needs.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree required. Preferred area of study in Land Management, Energy Management, Business, or related field.
• 5+ years of experience as an oil and gas company Landman required.
• Direct surface land experience in and knowledge of Texas land, required.
• Experience supporting drilling, completions, production, water sourcing, access, and other field operations, preferred.
• Experience securing surface use agreements, rights-of-way, permits, water use agreements, and damage releases, preferred.
• RL, RPL or CPL Certification, preferred.
• Member of AAPL, preferred.
• Knowledge and experience with P2Land and Zendesk, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong relationship-building skills with landowners, field personnel, contractors, and internal cross-functional teams.
• System savvy and ability to work with different applications and databases.
• Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, agreements, permits, and operational requests at the same time.
• Demonstrates taking ownership of actions and follows through on commitments by handling critical issues, holding others accountable, and doing the right thing in all cases.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced organization while adapting to competing demands and changing operational priorities.
• Proven ability to build respect, dependability, and rapport with the Land team and other functional groups.
