The Assistant Mechanic supports the Maintenance and Facilities team with the inspection, maintenance, repair, and upkeep of buildings, equipment, and mechanical systems. This position works under the direction of the Mechanic, Maintenance Supervisor, or Facilities Manager and assists with completing work orders and maintaining safe, clean, and functional facilities.
• Assist the Mechanic with routine maintenance, repairs, and preventative maintenance of facility equipment and systems.
• Assist with troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and other facility-related issues within the employee's training and authorization.
• Perform basic repairs and adjustments to building fixtures, equipment, doors, hardware, and other facility components.
• Assist with preventative maintenance inspections and document identified issues.
• Respond to assigned work orders and complete tasks in a timely and professional manner.
• Assist with moving, installing, assembling, and maintaining equipment and facility furnishings.
• Use hand tools, power tools, ladders, and maintenance equipment safely and appropriately.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and organized condition.
• Assist with maintaining an accurate inventory of maintenance supplies, parts, and materials.
• Report damaged, unsafe, or malfunctioning equipment and building conditions to the Mechanic or supervisor.
• Follow all applicable safety procedures, manufacturer recommendations, and company/district policies.
• Assist with emergency maintenance needs when directed.
• Maintain professional communication with school administrators, staff, contractors, custodial employees, and other district personnel.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while working in school buildings.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Mechanic, Maintenance Supervisor, or Facilities Manager.
Safety Responsibilities
• Follow all required safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Immediately report unsafe conditions, accidents, injuries, or equipment damage to management.
• Properly secure tools, equipment, work areas, and materials when work is completed.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Mechanic, Maintenance Supervisor, or Facilities Manager.
• Follow lockout/tagout and other applicable safety procedures when required and authorized.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous maintenance, mechanical, construction, facilities, or related experience preferred.
• Basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and building maintenance practices preferred.
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a maintenance team.
• Strong attendance, reliability, and communication skills.
• Valid driver's license may be required.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, and reach for extended periods.
• Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment as required.
• Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments and in varying temperatures.
• Ability to safely use ladders and access areas necessary to perform assigned duties.
• Ability to perform duties safely with or without reasonable accommodation.
