We are looking for an experienced and confident Medical Secretary/Administrator to join our busy Ophthalmology team.
Working closely with consultants and wider multidisciplinary teams, you will provide secretarial and administrative support, coordinate patient pathways, waiting lists and theatre/elective bookings and respond to enquiries from patients and healthcare professionals.
You will be organised, accurate and able to use your own initiative with the confidence to manage competing priorities, resolve day to day issues and recognise when escalation is needed.
As a senior medical secretary, you will also support and train colleagues and contribute to effective ways of working across the service.

Main duties of the job
The Senior Medical Secretary will provide a high-quality, comprehensive medical secretarial and administrative service to the Ophthalmology clinical team.
The postholder will support the effective coordination of patient pathways, waiting lists and inpatient and day case theatre activity, ensuring administrative actions are completed accurately and promptly and that patients progress through their pathway in accordance with Trust policies and relevant national and local waiting time requirements.
Working closely with consultants, nursing teams, theatres, pre-assessment and operational colleagues, the postholder will manage their own workload, resolve routine administrative issues, identify delays or concerns and escalate appropriately when required.
The postholder will act as an experienced member of the administrative team, supporting colleagues and contributing to consistent, efficient and patient-centred ways of working.

Experience Essential
Previous medical secretarial or relevant healthcare administrative experience. Experience of managing a varied workload and competing priorities. Experience of using electronic patient, record-management Experience of dealing professionally with patients/service users and colleagues, including sensitive or challenging situations. Experience of patient pathways (RTT/Non RTT) Experience of theatre or elective booking. Experience of supporting or training colleagues.
Desirable
Experience of improving administrative processes or ways of working.
Skills Essential
Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise competing demands and meet deadlines. Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work accurately with good attention to detail.
Knowledge Essential
Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality. Sound knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Office packages, including Excel and Power-point, internet, e-mail etc... Knowledge of Patient Administration System (or equivalent system) Knowledge of Medical Terminology
Qualifications Essential
Educated to GCSE level or equivalent, with good literacy and numeracy skills. Level 3 vocational qualification in a relevant subject, or equivalent relevant experience. Evidence of relevant continuing professional development. An appropriate speed and accuracy of typing is required for this role and this will be assessed at interview
