Programming and Events Specialist
Job Description: Halifax Public Libraries invites INTERNAL and EXTERNAL applications for the part-time, permanent position of Programming and Events Specialist at Halifax Central Library.
This is a unionized position. Preference will be given to internal NSUPE Local 14 employees.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Under the direction of the Programming & Community Engagement Lead, and in collaboration with other Specialists, the Programming and Events Specialist will: • Plan, deliver and evaluate the programs and events – for the branch, district, and/or region • Provide facilitation in programs and meetings • Facilitate diverse play, social, recreational and learning experiences • Work to actively engage volunteers and learners in the library in formal and informal ways • Build relationships and maintain community partnerships • Participate in hiring public service staff • Train and support staff in programming and services • Assist with the supervision of volunteers • Provide guidance to Services Advisors and other staff in the area of specialization • Act as a resource in the area of programming and service approaches • Support regional projects and initiatives and participate on regional teams • Act as Person in Charge in library branch(es) • Display, promote, and perform work duties in a positive and safe way and display safety awareness at all times. • Show commitment to health and safety standards, follow health and safety policies and procedures and encourage colleagues to work to the same standards by reporting incidents, hazardous conditions and improvement possibilities. Education and Experience: • Bachelor’s Degree AND two (2) years of related experience OR • Two (2) years of Post-Secondary and four (4) years of related experience OR • Completion of Grade Twelve (12) or equivalent and six (6) years of related experience (Related experience can come from a number of sources such as volunteer work, community work, customer service, hospitality, or retail experience)
Requirements: • Read and write English • Excellent communication skills • Customer service skills • Conflict resolution skills • Public speaking and presentation skills • Demonstrated ability to provide instruction and training • Experience in program planning, delivery and evaluation • Awareness of issues related to adult literacy • Experience working with diverse communities • Teaching experience with adults or previous work experience in providing literacy programs • Knowledge of popular media and resources • Basic computer knowledge and skills including: • Functions of a web browser • Microsoft office applications • Social media applications
• Intermediate technology skills including: • Willingness to learn and experiment with additional tools and technologies • Willingness to support others in learning technical skills and concepts
Assets: • Knowledge of related groups, organizations and services • Fluency in a second language • Facilitation Skills
TRAVEL This position requires occasional travel between our various library branches and community sites within the Halifax Regional Municipality.

Schedule: This position is designated a minimum 100 hours over two (2) pay periods.
*Events team members work a flexible schedule throughout the week, including after-hours shifts that can run as late as 3:00am. This schedule will change frequently to accommodate programming and events.
CA11.04 (e): Part-time event services employees may be regularly scheduled to work evenings and week-ends (including Sundays). Where operationally feasible, part-time event services employees shall be regularly scheduled to have two (2) consecutive days off at least every second week. Where feasible, the Employer shall provide part-time event services employees with two (2) consecutive days off each week.
CA11.08 (b): Event Services employees’ working hours shall be posted at least fourteen (14) days in advance; however they are subject to change with as much advance notice as is reasonably possible, but no less than forty-eight (48) hours’ notice unless the employee otherwise agrees to the change.
