About this role
Engineer IV
Job Summary: General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.
System Integration Project Engineers have a unique opportunity to work at the center of the development of advanced unmanned aircraft systems and see new capabilities evolve from concept through integration, system test, and the final operational system. Rather than focusing on a single component or phase of development, this role works across the air vehicle, software, ground control systems, datalinks, human-machine interfaces, and test environments to understand how the complete system comes together.
The System Integration Project Engineer helps lead that process, working across software, systems, electrical, avionics, test, flight operations, and other engineering organizations to turn new features and capabilities into integrated system solutions. Under general direction with limited review, this position independently performs difficult and complex engineering work, develops approaches to resolving unusual integration problems, and coordinates multidisciplinary engineering activities to achieve integration and test objectives.
This position requires a strong systems perspective, technical credibility, and demonstrated leadership experience. The successful candidate must be able to bring the appropriate engineering disciplines together, understand technical evidence and system-level impacts, establish a path forward, and drive teams and actions through resolution.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Plans, coordinates, and leads software and system integration activities across multidisciplinary teams using laboratory, simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, system test, and operational test environments. • Leads technical activities and small cross-functional engineering teams by establishing objectives, coordinating work, resolving technical issues, and driving actions to completion. • Independently analyzes complex integration problems involving aircraft systems, software, hardware, communications, interfaces, configurations, and data flows and develops recommended approaches for resolution. • Leads troubleshooting and root-cause investigations by coordinating technical experts and evaluating system logs, test results, network traffic, message exchanges, diagnostic data, and observed system behavior. • Assesses integration readiness across software, hardware, requirements, test assets, system configurations, technical dependencies, and engineering documentation. • Identifies technical, schedule, and integration risks; communicates potential impacts; and works across engineering organizations to develop and execute mitigation or recovery plans. • Leads integration reviews and technical discussions, communicates findings and recommendations, and influences multidisciplinary teams toward resolution without requiring direct management authority. • Develops and maintains integration plans, schedules, technical status, risks, dashboards, and engineering information using tools such as Jira, Confluence, Jama, and related systems. • Identifies opportunities to improve engineering workflows through automation, scripting, data analysis, and approved AI-enabled tools. We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.
Job Qualifications: • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, four or more years of experience with a masters degree, or two or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education. • Must have demonstrated experience leading technical activities or small multidisciplinary engineering teams, including coordinating work, resolving technical issues, and driving actions to completion. • Must have experience planning and leading integration or test activities, including coordinating dependencies, resources, configurations, and technical readiness. • Must have experience supporting the development, integration, or test of unmanned aircraft systems or similarly complex manned aircraft systems. • Must have broad understanding of aircraft or UAS system architecture and interactions among major functions such as navigation/INS-GPS, flight controls, electrical/power, propulsion/fuel, avionics, communications, LOS/BLOS datalinks, and ground control systems. Depth in one or more areas is desirable. • Must understand end-to-end system development across requirements, design, implementation, integration, verification, system test, and operational test, including interaction between airborne systems, datalinks, ground systems, and human-machine interfaces. • Working knowledge of STANAG 4586 and UAS command-and-control architectures, interfaces, and message flows is highly desirable. • Must possess strong system-level troubleshooting skills and experience working across software, hardware, communications, interfaces, and system boundaries. • Experience with diagnostic tools and techniques such as Wireshark, message analyzers, Linux/Red Hat utilities, system logs, test suites, or equivalent tools is highly desirable. • Must understand software development and integration lifecycles and have experience working within Agile software development environments. • Experience with Jira, Confluence, Jama, or similar engineering collaboration and requirements management tools is desirable. • Demonstrated ability to improve engineering workflows through automation, scripting, data analysis, or approved AI-enabled tools is desirable. • Must possess strong technical communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills and be capable of leading multidisciplinary technical discussions and communicating recommendations to engineering and program stakeholders. • Must be able to travel occasionally to Flight Operations or other test locations to support system integration and testing activities.
