About this role
Field has entered its next phase of growth. In June, the UK energy regulator, Ofgem, selected 16 long-duration energy storage projects to progress to delivery. Field were awarded five of these. Collectively, in MWh terms, our projects are approximately double the capacity of all battery energy storage installed in the UK to date. We currently have 4 projects totalling over 1GWh of energy storage in construction in GB with lots more delivery to do. We’re proud of the work we’ve been doing in the policy and regulation space. Field’s leadership on the oversubscription of batteries following grid connection reform has resulted in CUSC Modification Proposal CMP 470 being recommended to Ofgem in quick time. Our work on this is one example of Field’s vision to be “code makers; not code takers”. Your Mission You will shape energy regulation and policy to enable Field to deliver our ambitious projects - in turn delivering value for energy consumers and driving decarbonisation. You will identify areas of regulation which act as a barrier to our projects, prioritise the most impactful, and work with the regulator, Government departments and the System Operator to deliver real change. A key focus will be on developing regulation required to deliver long duration energy storage projects, alongside pursuing other areas of reform needed to support such projects, including the Government-led Reformed National Pricing package. You will report to the Global Regulation and Policy Lead, Andrew Enzor, working autonomously to drive forward high-value change for Field. Andrew is a long-standing CUSC panel member and authority on transmission and distribution charging. He previously led Cornwall Insight’s consultancy team. If you have experience in driving change in energy policy and regulation then we’d love to hear from you! What you’ll be doing This is a broad and varied role with the opportunity to have massive impact. Key responsibilities include: Identifying, prioritising, and driving forward change to energy regulation and policy in GB Across all value streams for storage, you will pinpoint barriers to our projects and opportunities for commercial optimisation Covering grid connections, network charges, wholesale energy markets, balancing mechanism, capacity market and ancillary services This will be through contributing to active workstreams (such as Reformed National Pricing) and identifying new ones within our control (such as industry code modifications) Across all areas, educating policy makers and regulators on how to unlock the benefits of storage for the energy system Driving forward new regulation supporting long duration energy storage projects Working with Ofgem to develop a workable long duration energy storage licence Leading Field’s implementation of the obligations placed on us by that licence, working with colleagues across development, construction, corporate development, core finance and operations teams Looking ahead to future long duration energy storage and other comparable opportunities, optimising regulatory arrangements to maximise the value and likelihood of success of such schemes Building on your existing network to forge alliances with other companies with aligned interests Depending on context, this could be trade bodies such as Energy Storage Network and Energy UK, other storage developers, or other industry participants who share our interests on a specific topic Sharing your knowledge and analysis of the impacts of regulatory changes with colleagues across the business and using their expertise to inform our approach You will be at the forefront of energy regulation pertaining to storage, and will be expected to proactively identify areas which impact Field, inform colleagues, and work with them to take action as required, be that a strategic pivot, process change, or regulatory change This is likely to cover legal, development, construction, corporate development, core finance, and operational teams
