Job summary
We are looking to appoint Vascular Surgery Registrar within the Somerset and North Devon Vascular Network. This is a fixed term appointment to provide maternity leave cover and the planned end date for this role is 5th October 2027. The post is based within the Somerset and North Devon Vascular Network, with activity across:
* Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton
* Yeovil District Hospital
* North Devon District Hospital, Barnstaple
* Other network sites as required
You will participate in a cross-site vascular service delivering comprehensive vascular care to the population of Somerset and North Devon but will be based in the hub at Musgrove Park Hospital.
You will gain surgical exposure to open arterial surgery, endovascular procedures, carotid interventions, peripheral arterial reconstruction, diabetic foot surgery, amputation surgery, venous interventions and emergency vascular surgery. You will participate in the vascular surgery on call rota.
The post is designed to provide high-quality clinical service while supporting continued surgical training and professional development.
Main duties of the job
Participate in the delivery of elective and emergency vascular surgery services.Assess and manage vascular surgery inpatients under consultant supervision.Attend vascular outpatient clinics across the network.Participate in operating theatre sessions, undertaking procedures appropriate to experience and competence.Support the management of acute vascular referrals.Contribute to vascular ward roundsParticipate in multidisciplinary team meetings, including Vascular MDT, Diabetic Foot MDT, Radiology Meetings and Morbidity and Mortality meeting.Participate in the on call rota.Participate in the undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.Contribute to formal and informal teaching sessions.Support the training of resident training doctors and physician associates where applicable.Maintain an appropriate surgical portfolio and logbook.Participate in clinical audit and quality improvement projects.Support delivery of the National Vascular Registry (NVR) requirements.Participate in departmental governance activities.Present audit and quality improvement work within the department.Contribute to research activity where opportunities arise.Practise in accordance with GMC standards and Good Medical Practice.Adhere to local Trust policies and procedures.Participate in appraisal and mandatory training processes.Support a culture of patient safety and continuous improvement.Maintain accurate and contemporaneous clinical records.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification. Full GMC registration with licence to practise. Evidence of progression in surgical training or equivalent experience.
Desirable
MRCS or equivalent qualification. National Vascular Registry experience.
Experience Essential
Minimum of Core Surgical Training or equivalent. Experience in the assessment and management of vascular surgical patients. Experience of emergency surgical care. Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable
Experience in endovascular procedures. Evidence of audit, quality improvement or research activity. Presentation or publication record. Completion of relevant vascular surgery courses.
Additional Criteria Essential
Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to prioritise workload and manage competing demands. Evidence of operative competency appropriate to level of training. Commitment to high standards of patient care.
