Main duties of the job
The following are the core responsibilities of the phlebotomist. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels
Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample
Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols
Maintaining accurate patient records on TPP SystmOne
The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples
Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies
Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner
Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidancewhen necessary for patient related matters

Job responsibilities
To provide a high-quality and efficient phlebotomy service to patients registered at the practice, supporting the clinical team in the delivery of safe and effective care. The postholder will work independently to collect blood samples from patients, ensuring accurate labelling, recording, and timely dispatch of specimens to support diagnosis and ongoing clinical care.
Key Responsibilities
Perform venepuncture on patients in line with clinical guidance and infection control standards.
Ensure samples are correctly labelled, recorded, and prepared for collection by the laboratory.
Accurately update patient records on the clinical system (SystmOne).
Maintain equipment, stock levels, and cleanliness of the phlebotomy area.
Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, and administrative staff to ensure a smooth and efficient service.
Provide reassurance and information to patients, ensuring dignity, privacy, and comfort at all times.
Report any abnormal findings, incidents, or concerns to the appropriate clinician or manager.
Adhere to all practice policies, including infection control, health and safety, confidentiality, and safeguarding.

Person Specification
Personal Attributes Essential
Compassionate, patient-focused approach. Reliable, punctual, and well-organised. Flexible and adaptable to the needs of the practice.
Qualifications Essential
Accredited phlebotomy qualification or equivalent competency-based training. Evidence of up-to-date training and continued professional development.
Desirable
Basic Life Support (BLS) training. Infection control training.
Experience Essential
Competency in phlebotomy, with evidence of up-to-date training and practice. Ability to communicate messages and instructions accurately to colleagues, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrate good customer care skills and the ability to communicate effectively with the Multidisciplinary team, patients, carers and visitors. Ability to prioritise the care requirements for identified patients Basic skills of empathy and reassurance. Basic keyboard and IT skills Organise own day to day work tasks or activities. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Understanding of infection control and patient confidentiality. Accurate record-keeping and attention to detail.
Desirable
Previous experience working in a GP practice or healthcare setting. Familiarity with NHS laboratory procedures and IT systems (e.g. SystmOne). Basic Life Support and infection control training.
