Job Title: Construction Project EngineerJob DescriptionThis Construction Project Engineer role supports a self-performing general contractor that delivers civil, structural, and mechanical construction services for industrial markets. The position is based in Brighton and focuses on the rigging division, working on projects that range from ground-up construction and renovations to maintenance, outages, equipment installations, demolition, and general industrial construction. You will support Project Managers with on-site operations, safety, RFIs, change management, and project controls while helping to drive projects from initial concept through successful completion. Responsibilities • Oversee and direct construction projects from conception to completion, ensuring scope, schedule, and quality requirements are met. • Collaborate closely with engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to determine project specifications and technical requirements. • Manage all document control activities, including organization, distribution, and tracking of project documentation. • Assist in the preparation, maintenance, and reporting of the master project schedule. • Apply knowledge in design scheduling, construction scheduling, program scheduling, and cost and resource loading, including developing detailed work breakdown structures (WBS), milestones, activity definitions, logical sequences, durations, dependencies, interdependencies, and activity contingencies. • Coordinate and facilitate project meetings, ensuring clear communication and follow-up on action items. • Manage prime contracts and subcontracts, including compliance with terms, scope, and deliverables. • Take responsibility for the overall direction, completion, and financial outcome of assigned projects. • Review projects with estimators to support the bid process and review and sign off on estimates prior to proposal completion. • Create overall job schedules and issue schedules, work orders, and budgets to both office and field teams. • Prepare project status reports and ensure work adheres to contract specifications and project requirements. • Report and document all changes on each project, including change orders, submittals, revised plan sets, and changes to work orders resulting from modifications to the original contract. • Monitor materials and work completed to prepare and issue pay requests for each project before billing due dates. • Act as an intermediary for all communications between owners, engineers, and internal personnel to maintain and strengthen relationships. • Develop and implement corrective actions in alignment with quality and safety programs. • Ensure customer quality standards are consistently met across all project activities. • Conduct quality inspections to verify compliance with project specifications and standards. • Support construction safety practices on-site and reinforce adherence to safety protocols. • Work concurrently on approximately 1 to 5 projects, balancing priorities and resource allocation. Essential Skills • Minimum of 3 years of experience working as a Project Engineer for a general contractor or heavy civil firm. • Bachelors degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering (engineering degree preferred). • Experience with industrial construction, including civil and concrete work, equipment installations, repair and maintenance, equipment demolition, rigging, and general contracting. • Proficiency with construction administration processes such as RFIs, change orders, document control, and project coordination. • Strong project management and project engineering skills, including scheduling, budgeting, and progress reporting. • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally, approximately 20% throughout the state. • Software proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Adobe tools, Microsoft Project, and Primavera P6. • Demonstrated ability to develop, maintain, and update project schedules in Microsoft Project and Primavera P6, with at least 3 years of scheduling experience preferred. • Solid understanding of construction safety practices in industrial and heavy civil environments. • Experience working with general contractors and in heavy civil or industrial construction settings. • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. • Effective communication skills for coordinating with owners, engineers, field personnel, and other stakeholders. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, for reporting, tracking, and project documentation. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Industrial and heavy commercial education or project experience, particularly in heavy civil construction. • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or progress toward certification. • Ability to travel throughout Michigan and the broader Midwest region (approximately 20% in-state travel and less than 5% out-of-state travel). • Knowledge and experience supporting modifications and upgrades to existing facilities and new construction projects in automotive, electric generation (hydroelectric, coal, and gas), steel mills, manufacturing, and water or wastewater facilities. • Experience working with or coordinating subcontracted MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) trades. • Proven ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with project stakeholders, validated through references. • Demonstrated desire to learn, improve, and grow within a project engineering and management career path. • Competitive, results-driven mindset with a focus on delivering high-quality projects safely and efficiently. Work EnvironmentThe position is based in an office located in Brighton, Michigan, with approximately 70% of time spent in the office and the remainder on project sites. Typical workweeks range from 50 to 60 hours, often structured as 10-hour days, with schedules adjusted as needed based on project demands. You will manage and visit multiple industrial construction sites across Michigan, with about 20% in-state travel and less than 5% out-of-state travel; all travel expenses are covered. Services include industrial construction, civil and concrete work, machinery installation, structural steel erection, heavy rigging, material handling, specialty welding, and industrial maintenance.
