Job Title: Systems Engineer 2
Reporting to: Director of Systems and Electrical Engineering Location: Groton, CT Position Type: Full time
Position Summary: ThayerMahan is seeking a Systems Engineer 2 to join our team. In this role, you will help design, develop, test, troubleshoot, and manage a range of complex systems related to maritime domain awareness and acoustic intelligence collection.
Role and Responsibilities:
Design, Maintain, and Improve Systems
• Track system statuses over the full product lifecycle.
• Manage system upgrades, updates, and patching.
• Monitor system performance and reliability and troubleshoot complex issues.
• Actively participate in prototyping, troubleshooting, and testing, while providing hands-on support.
• Assist in the development of early-stage systems by helping establish design constraints/objectives, test events, and acceptance criteria.
Documentation
• Review Contracts & translate customer needs into engineering system requirements.
• Develop acceptance test procedures for internal verification & contractual requirements validation.
• Document systems, architecture diagrams, and operational procedures.
• Improve system organization, documentation, and revision control.
Cross Functional Collaboration
• Coordinate engineering teams during full system development, ensuring contractual requirements are met.
• Support and provide feedback on designs and documentation from other engineering teams.
• Act as the Test Director for engineering led system test and integration events.
• Plan and Organize system test events to meet multi-team engineering goals.
• Develop tools to aid and improve production and reproducibility of systems.
Strategic Long-Term Contributions
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team knowledge sharing.
• Evaluate new technologies and recommend system improvements.
Required:
• U.S. Citizenship (position entails access to Controlled Unclassed Information).
• Holds a security clearance or can obtain DoD security clearance.
• B.S., M.S., or M.ENG. in Systems Engineering or related field.
• 3+ years of professional Systems/Test/Reliability/Quality Engineering experience (or similar), preferably in robotics, ocean technology or ruggedized field systems.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work both within a team and across teams.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Comfortable with hands-on work, including prototyping & testing.
Preferred (but not required):
• Familiarity with designing, developing and validating for harsh, maritime environments.
• Familiarity with documentation & issue tracking in Gitlab.
• Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering.
• Experience drafting test plans for engineering verification and validation.
• Experience drafting, using and/or reviewing engineering documentation (mechanical part/assembly drawings, electrical schematics, build guides, etc.).
