Position Summary
The Operator / Container Handler is responsible for the safe and efficient movement, loading, unloading, stacking, and transporting of containers within the port terminal. This position operates specialized heavy equipment and supports vessel, rail, and truck operations while maintaining compliance with all safety, environmental, and operational procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Operate container handling equipment, including reach stackers, top loaders, forklifts, terminal tractors, and rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes as qualified.
• Load and unload containers from vessels, railcars, chassis, and storage yards.
• Move containers throughout the terminal according to operational schedules and dispatch instructions.
• Inspect equipment before, during, and after operation and report any mechanical issues or safety concerns.
• Verify container numbers, seals, and cargo documentation for accuracy.
• Stack containers safely and according to terminal operating procedures.
• Maintain clear communication with supervisors, dispatchers, crane operators, and other terminal personnel.
• Follow all federal, state, port authority, and company safety regulations.
• Assist with vessel operations, yard inventory management, and cargo handling activities.
• Monitor work areas for hazards and participate in safety meetings and training programs.
• Perform housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
• Respond to operational emergencies and weather-related events as directed.
Required Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid driver's license.
• Experience operating heavy equipment preferred.
• Knowledge of container terminal operations preferred.
• Ability to read and understand operating instructions, work orders, and safety procedures.
• Basic computer and radio communication skills.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to enter and exit heavy equipment multiple times during a shift.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to work at heights and around moving equipment.
• Normal vision, hearing, and depth perception, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Work Environment
• Outdoor marine terminal and port facility.
• Exposure to noise, dust, vibration, and changing weather conditions.
• Day, night, weekend, holiday, and overtime work may be required.
• Rotating shifts may be necessary to support 24-hour port operations.
