Equinox Gold is developing the South Carlin Complex, a greenfield open-pit, truck-and-shovel, heap-leach gold operation in Nevada targeting first gold in 2027. As a new mine, the operation is in the foundational stages of establishing its workforce, systems, procedures, standards, and culture. Within this environment, the Mine Trainer plays a critical role in supporting operational readiness by designing and implementing the training and competency frameworks required to safely and effectively introduce a large, modern mining fleet and prepare the workforce for production startup. Equipment includes the Hitachi EX3600 shovel, Cat 995 loader, Epiroc DML RCS drills, Cat 789 haul trucks, Cat D10/D11 dozers, graders, water trucks, and supporting mobile equipment.
The Mine Trainer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the training, competency, and qualification systems required to support the safe and effective introduction of new mining fleet equipment and the successful startup of mining operations. This role leads the creation of standard operating procedures (SOPs), operator procedures, training materials, competency standards, assessments, and qualification programs to ensure employees are fully prepared before equipment commissioning and production commencement.
Key Responsibilities
· Champion a zero-harm culture by promoting safety, compliance, and workforce competency across all training programs.
· Develop and deliver training, qualification, and competency programs to support mine startup, fleet commissioning, and ongoing operations.
· Create and maintain SOPs, safe work procedures, training materials, and competency assessments for mining equipment and operational activities.
· Ensure compliance with MSHA regulations, company standards, and site requirements through effective training and documentation systems.
· Coordinate with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and OEM partners to align workforce readiness with operational milestones.
· Conduct classroom, field, and hands-on training, assessments, and competency verification for equipment operators and frontline employees.
· Identify skill gaps and implement development plans to improve safety, productivity, and operational performance.
· Build workforce capability through coaching, mentoring, and development of internal trainers and subject matter experts.
· Monitor training effectiveness, qualification status, and workforce readiness, using data and feedback to drive continuous improvement.
· Maintain accurate training records, compliance documentation, and readiness reporting for leadership.
Required Experience & Skills
· Minimum 10 years of experience in open-pit hard rock mining, including truck-and-shovel operations and heap leach processing environments.
· Proven expertise in workforce development, competency management, operator training, and operational readiness within open-pit mining operations.
· Experience developing and implementing SOPs, operating procedures, training materials, competency standards, qualification programs, and workforce readiness initiatives.
· Strong knowledge of mining equipment operations, including loading, hauling, drilling, blasting, and support equipment activities.
· Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
· Experience supporting mine startup, fleet commissioning, operational readiness, or the introduction of new equipment and systems is preferred.
· Must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
· Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. for any employer.
