Job summary
Applications for this post are invited from Clinical Technologists with an appetite to address the challenges of service growth and improvement, underpinned by experience in Radiation Protection, Diagnostic Radiology and Quality Assurance.
As a member of the Radiology Physics Group the post holder will take an active role within the Clinical Technologist workforce of the Section and be part of Diagnostic Radiology Sub-group enabling delivery of high quality Radiation Protection, Quality Assurance and technical support services to Radiology and Nuclear Medicine departments within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and other NHS and commercial organisations within South Yorkshire and beyond.
The focus of this post is to support the delivery of efficient, high-quality Radiation Protection and Quality Assurance across multiple modalities.
We require applicants who can rise to the challenge of delivering routine and ad hoc, complex multisite/multi-customer services.
Please also note this vacancy is banded dependent upon applicants experience relevant to this post. The banding of the successful applicant/s will start at Band 4 unless applicants meet the necessary threshold of skills and experience required to start on Band 5.
Main duties of the job
To provide technical support to scientific staff in the provision of a high-quality radiation protection service to users of x-ray units, radioactive materials and non-ionising radiations, extending over a comprehensive range of services, in both hospital environments and to external clients.
To use the Section spreadsheets and databases to record and report on x-ray QA surveys.
Perform complex technical measurements and calibrations as part of Diagnostic Radiology QA services to all Trusts and other establishments, consistent with documented procedures and in full compliance with relevant health and safety guidelines.
To follow Section procedures, maintain appropriate records and to report any non-conformances to senior members of the section.
To participate in the calibration of diagnostic QA viewing monitors to set protocols.
To participate where appropriate with the section cross calibration service on a range of x-ray test equipment.
To assist when needed with the technical aspects of the unsealed radiation protection services including environmental monitoring service, monitor calibrations, and radon surveys.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications Essential
BSc Degree in Physics or a related scientific discipline or other relevant qualification or IPEM Diploma in Clinical Technology (Band 5) 3 Science based A levels or equivalent e.g. BTEC, NVQ level 3. 2 A levels if additionally hold a degree (Band 4)
Desirable
Eligible for admission to the Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists (Band 5) Foundation degree, BSc in a relevant subject (Band 4)
Experience Essential
Experience of Diagnostic Radiology QA and radiation protection. (Band 5) Previous work experience in a technical and/or healthcare setting (Band 4)
Desirable
Experience of unsealed sources radiation protection. (Band 5) Experience in a technical role (Band 4)
Personal Qualities Essential
Good communication skills, both written and verbal. (Band 4&5) Good interpersonal and organisational skills. (Band 4&5) Good analytical and problem solving skills (Band 4&5) Good standard of numeracy, literacy. Able to write reports (Band 4&5) Good time / workload management skills.
