Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Orthotist to join Steeper as Principal Orthotist - South Coast, with operational responsibility for our established orthotic services in Portsmouth and Bournemouth. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced clinician looking to progress into leadership and develop operational management skills while remaining clinically active.
Based at Portsmouth you will provide day-to-day leadership across the South Coast services, line managing a team of five Orthotists and an Orthotic Technician, with oversight of the local orthotic workshop. Previous formal management experience is not essential; full support and development will be provided through the Combined Services Manager and wider Steeper leadership team.
Main duties of the job
As Principal Orthotist, you will combine your own clinical caseload with dedicated management time, providing visible clinical and operational leadership across Portsmouth and Bournemouth. You will work closely with the Combined Services Manager, NHS partners and the wider Steeper team to ensure services are safe, efficient, responsive and patient-centred.
You will support the professional development of the clinical team, coordinate staffing and timetables, maintain service continuity and use performance information to identify opportunities for improvement. The role also includes oversight of the workshop interface, team communication, student placements, multidisciplinary training and local service development.

Key Responsibilities
Assist the Clinical Service Manager in the development of pathways, processes and procedures to improve service quality
To effectively use up-to-date evidence-based information from national and international sources to ensure an innovative approach to the cost-effective delivery of clinical care
Support clinical and organisational innovation and improvement efforts across the MDT. This will focus in particular, but not exclusively, on care within the local setting
Lead on evaluation of cost-effectiveness, safety and quality of new and existing devices and services, applying evidence-based practice and guidance from Steeper Best Practice and Product Evaluation Groups.
Lead in clinic organisation, to maximise clinician productivity through staff utilisation, skills mix and progression planning.
Maximise clinical productivity with reference to local KPIs eg RTT, DNA rates
Be accountable for KPIs linked to clinician performance, quality, outcomes and clinic management
Lead on the delivery of audits/research within your area of responsibility
Work with the team members to meet appraisal objectives to agreed timescales.
Facilitate training experiences for NHS and Steeper staff within your area of responsibility.
Provide administrative functions such as sickness reporting and annual leave planning within your area of responsibility
Work to increase the use of Steeper products and those of Steeper preferred suppliers within your area of expertise.
Work as a link between Steeper and your area of responsibility to manager operational issues as they arise.
Management and clinical leadership
Continue to undertake clinics albeit reduced in number in order have necessary time to manage
Assist in the development of effective and efficient service modernisation and redesign to maximise benefit to patients, including development and delivery of new ways of working e.g. Quality and Outcomes
Support and lead on innovation, pilots and new service developments
that aim to make prosthetic care more (cost-) effective and/or friendly to
patients and clinicians.
Support and lead on evaluation of cost-effectiveness, safety and quality
of new and existing services
Support development and implementation of new local care strategies
Contribute to the clinical governance agenda.
Demonstrate compliance with the health and safety regulations of local Trust and Steeper
Safeguard the welfare and safety of patients, public, staff and visitors by obtaining a balance between care and security in health care.
Ensure the confidentiality of patient related information and records
Lead on and deliver audits and implementation of changes arising from audit recommendations
Any other duties as reasonably requested, commensurate with your own skills and capabilities
Person Specification
Experience Essential
We are looking for an experienced Orthotist who is passionate about delivering excellent patient care and ready to take the next step into clinical and operational leadership. You will be highly organised, confident working autonomously and able to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, NHS partners and wider multidisciplinary teams. You will demonstrate sound clinical judgement, integrity and a genuine interest in developing people and services. Commercial awareness is important, together with the ability to balance clinical quality, operational performance and business need. Formal management experience is not essential; we are looking for someone with the potential and motivation to grow into the role.
