Job summary
Applications are invited for an enthusiastic lower limb arthroplasty surgeon colleague to join our friendly department at the Gateshead NHS Foundation Trust. This is a substantive appointment.
An opportunity has arisen at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead to appoint a new member of the team to address the demand for lower limb arthroplasty surgery. The appointed surgeon will be competent to perform primary lower limb arthroplasties such as primary total hip replacement, primary total knee replacement and unicondylar knee replacement, following fellowship training in lower limb arthroplasty. We currently plan to increase the proportion of day case procedures, and we anticipate that the appointed surgeon will participate in this work stream.
Main duties of the job
The appointed candidate will have a firm grasp of common trauma presentations, ideally with fellowship training in orthopaedic trauma. Ideally the appointed candidate will have an additional interest in managing paediatric trauma as part of the local hub and spoke network for paediatric trauma.
The successful candidate will be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead with occasional off-site clinics. Gateshead is a short commute to the vibrant city of Newcastle and has the added attraction of being close to the Northumberland Coast and the Lake District in Cumbria.
The department consists of 10 full time and two part-time consultants, 9 middle grades, 3 surgical care practitioners and one surgical assistant. 3 ST trainees are allocated to our unit as well as 2 core trainees. Currently 9 full-time consultants take part in a 1:9 on call rota and this post will include on call commitments.

Job description Job responsibilities
The job will be based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead. This is a full time additional newly created substantial consultant post. The successful candidate will participate in the trauma on-call rota and will be supported and encouraged to develop the arthroplasty service in our trust. The allocated PAs will be 10.0 with additional PAs being available based on service need.
The post includes a 1:3 weekday on call / trauma rota and a 1:9 weekend on call rota (this may be subject to change on appointment). It is expected that there will be at least one elective and one fracture clinic a week. There will at least two sessions allocated for elective surgery the delivery of which may be flexible depending on the theatre scheduling. Adequate time will be allocated for CPD activity.
