Job summary
This is a Trust Doctor (non-training) Level {1 or 2} post equivalent to a Tier 1 SHO.
The normal working day consists of covering the Paediatrics ward (C2) , Neonatal unit
(NNU) or the Paediatrics assessment unit (PAU) as per rota allocation as a level 2 doctor (Registrar level). You will also be doing out-of-hours including long days and night shifts as per rota schedules. During out of hours, you will be carrying the Tier 2 crash bleeps and attend any emergencies.
Main duties of the job
This is a busy Paediatric unit serving about 65,000 children in the borough. There are 3600
medical admissions a year. There are 2500 New Patient referrals from GPs and 6900 follow up
Out Patient appointments a year. There are special interest clinics in Epilepsy, Headache,
Neurodevelopment, Asthma, Diabetes, Gastroenterology and emotional and behaviour disorders.
There are also joint clinics with Neurologist and Cardiologist visiting from Birmingham Children's
Hospital. There is also a Genetics clinic supported by Geneticist from Q. E. Hospital, Birmingham.
The trust has named Surgeons and Anaesthetists with special interest in paediataric surgery
providing care in different surgical specialties.
The Paediatric ward is situated on the second floor just opposite to the neonatal unit. It has 41
beds for medical and surgical admissions. It has 9 cubicles and rest is divided into 4 bedded bays.
This included 2 HDU beds. There is an observation area for patients admitted from A&E
department. A separate adolescent admission area is also provided. There is a resuscitation room
with ventilator and CPAP facility for stabilisation, an admission room and play area staffed by the
play therapists. At present we operate a consultant of the week rota.
There is a designated children's Out Patient area and the Child Assessment Unit is situated on the
ground floor. All Paediatric out patient clinics are held in this area.

Providing junior doctors cover for the HDU
Running outpatient clinics and ward rounds with Consultant
Undertaking rounds in wards and neonatal unit
Attending abnormal deliveries.
Admitting emergencies and booked cases and undertaking routine ward duties
Participation in clinical audit within the paediatric department
Helping to supervise medical students on paediatric attachments.
Expected to do on-call duties, including nights and weekends, participating in Tier 2 rota
There may also be a requirement to undertake other similar duties as part of this post in order
to provide a quality service. These will be consistent with the level of responsibilities outlined
above.
You will be expected to liaise closely with your senior colleagues in all aspects of the
patient care until you develop confidence to initiate basic care on your own accord.

improvement schemes. You will be provided with Trust and departmental induction to help
you ease into the job.
The post-holder will be given a clinical supervisor throughout the post and will be expected
to undergo continuing professional development.

provide a quality service. These will be consistent with the level of responsibilities outlined above.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Professional Registration Essential
Medical qualification recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC) Full GMC registration with licence to practice Advanced Life Support Certificate
Knowledge, Training and Experience Essential
A minimum of 12 months UK clinical experience or equivalent 12 months experience at Foundation level or equivalent
Communication & Relationship Skills Essential
Demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC's Good Medical Practice
