American Sign Language (ASL) Teacher 2026-27 School Year Auburn High School / Eastern Montgomery High School Montgomery County Public Schools in Virginia is now accepting applications for an American Sign Language (ASL) Teacher position for the 2026-2027 school year at Auburn High School and Eastern Montgomery High School. Primary Responsibilities: The American Sign Language (ASL) Teacher provides engaging, standards-aligned instruction in American Sign Language and Deaf culture to high school students. The teacher develops students' receptive and expressive signing skills, visual communication abilities, cultural understanding and knowledge of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. The ASL Teacher plans and delivers differentiated instruction that supports students at varying levels of proficiency, assesses student progress, maintains an effective and inclusive learning environment, and collaborates with colleagues, families, and school administrators to support student achievement. The teacher promotes ASL as a complete natural language and provides students with opportunities to develop practical communication skills and cultural competence. Education/Licensure/Certifications:
• Hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license with the endorsement(s) required by the Virginia Department of Education to teach American Sign Language at the secondary level.
• Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language appropriate for effective classroom instruction.
• Maintain all licenses, endorsements, certifications, and professional development requirements applicable to the position.
• Academic preparation in American Sign Language, Deaf Studies, ASL education, world language education, or other related fields preferred.
• Master's degree in Education and/or the specific subject area preferred.
Experience:
• Successful teaching, student teaching, or other instructional experience preferred.
• Experience teaching American Sign Language to adolescents or secondary students preferred.
• Experience developing curriculum, assessing language proficiency, and utilizing technology for language instruction preferred.
• Meaningful experience with Deaf culture and the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community preferred.
• Experience utilizing technology in an instructional environment
• Ability to assume sole supervisory responsibility for students.
• Functional knowledge of commonly used office equipment and work-flow technologies
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• ASL Instruction: Plan and deliver developmentally appropriate instruction in American Sign Language, including receptive and expressive communication, vocabulary, grammatical structures, fingerspelling, non-manual signals, spatial organization, and conversational skills.
• Deaf Culture: Integrate instruction regarding Deaf culture, history, community, perspectives, norms, and contributions into the ASL curriculum.
• Curriculum Implementation: Develop and implement lessons aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning, applicable world language standards, division curriculum, and course objectives.
• Language Proficiency: Provide structured opportunities for students to develop increasingly sophisticated interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication skills using ASL.
• Visual Learning Environment: Establish an instructional environment that supports visual communication, including appropriate sight lines, attention-getting strategies, turn-taking, and other practices conducive to ASL instruction.
• Lesson Planning: Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, activities, projects, and assessments appropriate to students' proficiency levels and learning needs.
• Differentiated Instruction: Adapt instructional methods and materials to address varying abilities, learning styles, backgrounds, and educational needs.
• Student Assessment: Develop and administer formative and summative assessments of students' receptive, expressive, cultural, and linguistic knowledge and skills.
• Progress Monitoring: Maintain accurate records of student achievement and use assessment data to adjust instruction and provide targeted support.
• Feedback: Provide students with timely, specific, and constructive feedback regarding language development and academic progress.
• Technology Integration: Utilize video, digital recording, learning management systems, visual presentation tools, and other instructional technologies to support language acquisition and assessment.
• Classroom Management: Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, inclusive, and academically focused classroom environment conducive to visual language learning.
• Student Engagement: Utilize authentic communication activities, collaborative learning, projects, presentations, demonstrations, and other instructional strategies to promote active participation.
• Cultural Responsiveness: Present Deaf culture and communities respectfully and accurately and encourage students to understand diverse experiences and perspectives within Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities.
• Family Communication: Maintain appropriate communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress, attendance, academic concerns, and opportunities for improvement.
• Collaboration: Participate in department, faculty, professional learning community, and other school or division meetings as required.
• Student Support: Collaborate with counselors, special education personnel, administrators, and other staff to address individual student needs and implement applicable student plans.
• Professional Learning: Maintain and enhance knowledge of ASL linguistics, language pedagogy, Deaf culture, instructional technology, and effective teaching practices through ongoing professional development.
• School Responsibilities: Perform assigned supervisory, administrative, extracurricular, and other professional responsibilities consistent with expectations for classroom teachers.
• Compliance: Maintain student confidentiality and comply with applicable federal and state laws, Virginia Department of Education requirements, School Board policies, regulations, and administrative procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent and/or Principal or designee.
