This is a School Nurse position for Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS). Full-time (1.0 FTE) preferred; however, a part-time (less than 1.0 FTE) will be considered. Applications will be reviewed as they are received. This position is affiliated with the TCEA Employee Group

The starting salary is based upon the previous number of years of experience. Any part-time part-time position (less than 1.0 FTE) will be prorated to the appropriate FTE. General Summary: The District School Nurse has primary responsibility for the enhancement of the educational process of children and youth for grades Pre-K – 12 through improvement in their health status and through the attainment of greater knowledge in the area of health. The District School Nurse reports to the Executive Director of Special Education. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provides leadership in developing and monitoring formal and informal student health care plans with appropriate staff and building administrator. May be involved as appropriate in TASC, Section 504, and special education process.
• Coordinates, supervises, and provides training for the district medication policy and guidelines.
• Coordinates and trains administrative assistants to comply with the immunization compliance reporting process required by state statute.
• Provides medical guidance to schools regarding all communicable diseases and serves as a liaison to the health department and other agencies as appropriate. This includes working with the custodial staff.
• Consults with school staff regarding Pediculosis (head lice).
• Interprets health information when serving as a member of a special education placement committee or other program in which health information is desirable.
• Plans and provides in-service education, in cooperation with other appropriate personnel, for school personnel regarding health observation, referral systems and first aid and emergency care procedures.
• Assists families and students with community referrals and other health initiatives. Initiates referrals for supplemental testing when health information or developmental history indicates.
• Assists with the development and revision of written first aid, emergency care, and crisis policies.
• Recommends and implements school policies to comply with established health laws and makes specific recommendations to students and school personnel regarding immunizations and communicable diseases.
• Cooperates with administration and staff in establishing school health program policies and procedures in order that professional skills and knowledge may be used effectively in working with students, teachers and parents.
• Available via district cell phone outside of assigned time.
• Supports district summer programs as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Registered Nurse License preferred.
• Meets the standards for Professional School Nurse Certificate.
• Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing or related field.
• Two (2) years of successful work experience in public health, community health, or school nurse practice preferred.
• Excellent communication skills.
