Position Summary The Math Interventionist works collaboratively with teachers and administrators to identify students for mathematics intervention, determine appropriate instructional groupings, establish intervention goals, and make data-based decisions regarding continuation, modification, intensification, or exit from intervention, which improves overall mathematics achievement. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Provides targeted mathematics intervention to individual students and small groups based on identified academic needs.
• Analyzes multiple sources of student achievement data to identify students requiring intervention, diagnose skill gaps, establish instructional priorities, monitor response to intervention, and inform placement and exit decisions.
• Develops and implements evidence-based mathematics interventions aligned with the Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning and division curriculum.
• Monitors student progress regularly and adjusts intervention strategies, intensity, frequency, and grouping based on student performance.
• Maintains accurate records of student interventions, progress-monitoring data, and instructional outcomes.
• Supports the development of a coherent schoolwide mathematics intervention system by helping staff identify student needs, select appropriate interventions, monitor effectiveness, and respond when students are not making expected progress.
• Collaborates with mathematics teachers, special education teachers, administrators, and other instructional staff to identify student needs and coordinate appropriate supports.
• Collaborates with mathematics teachers to strengthen core instruction through data analysis, instructional planning, differentiation, intervention strategies, resources, and evidence-based practices.
• Works with classroom teachers to ensure intervention is connected to grade-level mathematics instruction while addressing prerequisite skill gaps that interfere with student access to grade-level content.
• Participates in collaborative planning, grade-level and department meetings, and data discussions to identify instructional needs and respond to student learning.
• Provides information and documentation to support intervention, referral, and student-support processes.
• Supports students in developing mathematical reasoning, problem-solving skills, fluency, confidence, and perseverance.
• Communicates with teachers, administrators, and families regarding student progress when appropriate.
• Participates in professional development related to mathematics instruction, intervention, assessment, and evidence-based practices.
• Maintains knowledge of current research, instructional practices, and Virginia requirements related to mathematics instruction.
• Performs other duties consistent with the position as assigned by the principal or Superintendent/designee.
Qualifications
• Holds or is eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license.
• Holds an appropriate teaching endorsement that qualifies the individual to provide mathematics instruction at the middle school level.
• Advanced coursework, certification, or demonstrated expertise in mathematics instruction, intervention, or mathematics education preferred.
• Successful experience of no less than 3 years teaching mathematics, preferably at the secondary level. Successful experience includes high ratings on teacher evaluations and student achievement.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning.
• Knowledge of mathematics intervention, differentiation, assessment, and progress-monitoring practices.
• Experience using student achievement data to plan and modify instruction.
• Strong communication, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work effectively with students with diverse academic needs.
