ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL – HIGH SCHOOL JOB SUMMARY The Assistant Principal – High School provides instructional, operational, and student-centered leadership in support of the Principal and the overall goals of the school and district. The Assistant Principal assists in the effective administration and daily operation of the high school; promotes a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment; supervises and evaluates assigned personnel; implements and enforces district, school, state, and federal requirements; and supports student achievement, attendance, engagement, behavior, and overall success. The Assistant Principal works collaboratively with students, staff, families, administrators, and community partners to address concerns, resolve conflicts, strengthen relationships, and promote a positive school culture. The position provides leadership in student discipline, restorative practices, instructional programs, school safety, staff development, school improvement, and other assigned school and district initiatives. The Assistant Principal exercises independent judgment within established policies, procedures, and assigned authority; maintains confidentiality; and represents the school and district in a professional, ethical, and constructive manner. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS School Leadership and Operations
• Supports the Principal in the overall leadership, administration, and daily operation of the high school.
• Assists with the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of school improvement goals, strategic initiatives, and district priorities.
• Manages assigned school administrative functions, including student discipline, attendance, supervision, scheduling, personnel assignments, safety procedures, and school operations.
• Makes timely and appropriate decisions within the scope of assigned authority and district policies and procedures.
• Assists in developing and implementing building procedures that promote effective, efficient, and safe school operations.
• Responds to urgent, complex, and unexpected situations and takes appropriate action to maintain student and staff safety.
• Serves as a building administrator and provides leadership and support during school activities, events, emergencies, and other assigned responsibilities.
• Assists the Principal in communicating and implementing school and district expectations with staff, students, and families.
Instructional Leadership and Staff Supervision
• Supervises and evaluates assigned instructional and/or support personnel in accordance with district expectations, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and established evaluation processes.
• Provides timely feedback, coaching, direction, and support to staff to promote professional growth and effective job performance.
• Addresses performance, conduct, and workplace concerns in a timely, appropriate, and well-documented manner.
• Supports implementation of curriculum, instructional practices, assessment strategies, culturally responsive teaching, English language development strategies, and special education processes.
• Collaborates with staff to identify instructional and student-support needs and develop strategies to improve student outcomes.
• Supports professional learning and staff development aligned with school and district goals.
• Monitors implementation of school and district expectations and works with staff to address concerns and improve practice.
• Uses available student, attendance, behavioral, and instructional data to identify needs and support school improvement efforts.
Student Support, Discipline, and School Culture
• Leads and supports student discipline processes consistent with district policies, applicable laws, and principles of fairness and due process.
• Applies discipline procedures consistently and appropriately while considering student circumstances, school expectations, and applicable requirements.
• Engages students, staff, and families in restorative practices and problem-solving conversations designed to address conflict, repair relationships, promote accountability, and increase positive choices.
• Works proactively with students and staff to identify barriers to student success and develop appropriate interventions and supports.
• Responds to student behavioral, attendance, academic, and safety concerns and coordinates appropriate interventions and resources.
• Collaborates with counselors, student services personnel, special education staff, teachers, families, and community partners to support student success.
• Promotes a school culture that emphasizes respect, belonging, accountability, student engagement, and high expectations for all students.
• Supports culturally responsive and equitable practices in student discipline, engagement, and school operations.
Communication and Collaboration
• Facilitates communication among administrators, personnel, students, parents/guardians, and community members for the purpose of evaluating situations, resolving concerns, solving problems, and supporting positive outcomes.
• Facilitates and participates in meetings related to curriculum, instruction, safety, student services, staff development, school improvement, site advisory groups, and other school or district initiatives.
• Communicates expectations, decisions, procedures, and other information clearly, professionally, and appropriately to staff, students, families, and community members.
• Responds appropriately to concerns and complaints and works collaboratively to resolve issues within the scope of the position.
• Prepares accurate reports, correspondence, records, documentation, and other materials necessary to support school and district operations.
• Presents information to staff, students, families, and community groups as assigned.
• Maintains appropriate confidentiality when handling personnel, student, family, and other sensitive information.
• Communicates regularly with the Principal regarding significant student, personnel, safety, operational, and community concerns.
Safety, Compliance, and Risk Management
• Supports the implementation and enforcement of district, school, state, and federal requirements applicable to school operations.
• Assists with school safety planning, emergency response, crisis management, and related drills and procedures.
• Maintains awareness of student and staff safety concerns and takes timely and appropriate action to address identified risks.
• Responds to emergencies and other safety-related situations in accordance with district procedures and assigned responsibilities.
• Ensures assigned responsibilities are carried out in accordance with district policies, administrative procedures, collective bargaining agreements, and applicable laws and regulations.
• Maintains accurate and timely records and documentation related to assigned responsibilities.
Family, Community, and School Engagement
• Builds and maintains positive, professional relationships with students, staff, families, and community partners.
• Supports meaningful family and community engagement.
• Represents the school and district at school, district, community, evening, weekend, athletic, extracurricular, and other school-related activities as assigned.
• Participates in district and school committees, projects, and initiatives as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS Experience Required
• Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience in a K–12 educational setting.
• Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with students, staff, families, and community members.
• Demonstrated leadership experience or evidence of assuming leadership responsibilities within a school or educational setting.
Preferred Experience
• Experience in a high school setting.
• Experience supervising, coaching, mentoring, or evaluating staff.
• Experience supporting student behavior, discipline, attendance, or school culture initiatives.
• Experience with restorative practices or other relationship-centered approaches.
• Experience supporting instructional improvement and professional learning.
• Experience working with multilingual learners and culturally and linguistically diverse students and families.
• Experience collaborating with special education and student services teams.
• Experience using data to inform student support, instructional, or school improvement decisions.
EDUCATION
• Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
• Current Oregon administrative license issued by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) with the appropriate endorsement/authorization for the assignment.
• Valid driver's license and evidence of insurability.
• Successful completion of required Oregon fingerprinting and criminal background clearance.
• Ability to maintain all licenses, certifications, and clearances required for the position.

WORKING CONDITIONS The Assistant Principal works in a school environment and regularly interacts with students, staff, families, administrators, and community members. The position requires the ability to manage frequent interruptions, changing priorities, time-sensitive situations, and potentially challenging or high-conflict circumstances. As a building administrator, the Assistant Principal is expected to participate in assigned evening, weekend, athletic, extracurricular, community, and other school-related activities and events. The position may require responding to emergencies or other situations outside the regular workday. The position requires regular presence throughout the school building and grounds and the ability to move between locations as necessary to supervise, respond to student and staff needs, and support safe and effective school operations.
