Staff Management
• Supervises clinical personnel involved in the Facility's pre-operative and post-operative nursing services.
• Interviews candidates for all applicable Pre-Op/PACU positions, makes recommendations to DON and Administrator regarding hiring decisions, and orients staff accordingly.
• Provides an adequate monitor of qualified staff. Coordinates, assigns work schedules, and provides relief coverage according to needs of the unit. Coordinates vacation and time off schedules with approval from DON.
• Implements agreed-upon staffing patterns based on direction of Facility leadership.
• Reviews and approves Pre-Op/PACU staff timecards. Substantiates all overtime hours to the DON.
• Sets expectations for staff by establishing and communicating department and individual goals, tracking progress towards meeting those goals, and actively communicating successes and areas requiring improvement.
• Provides ongoing Pre-Op/PACU staff performance management and feedback. Prepares and delivers annual staff evaluations, and continuously monitors job performance to confirm compliance with Facility policies and procedures. Delivers disciplinary measures to personnel, as needed and in collaboration with Facility leadership, to effectively manage performance.
• Guides and directs nursing staff regarding safe and effective patient care, problem-solving and decision making according to patient needs, staff capabilities and facility resources.
• In collaboration with the DON, arranges in-service programs and schedules/conducts department meetings.
• Understands, enforces and follows (as applicable) the job descriptions of all Pre-Op/PACU staff under direct supervision. Recommends changes to job descriptions, as appropriate, to ensure effective communication of expectations and responsibilities to staff.
Operations
• Actively promotes compliance with Infection Control and Safety policies and procedures within the Pre-Op/PACU areas.
• Manages the resolution of issues that arise during each shift. Executes decisions in the absence of the Director of Nursing and/or Administrator.
• Monitors compliance with Medication Management protocol within the Pre-Op/PACU areas. Coordinates oversight reviews performed by Pharmacy Consultant, reviews related findings/recommendations and works with DON to develop and implement necessary process changes, staff education and training.
• Reviews variance reports submitted by Pre-Op/PACU staff members. Completes investigative documentation, as appropriate, and forwards to DON and/or Administrator for review.
• Assists in investigating and initiating follow-up and corrective action when necessary in response to complaints and/or concerns from patients, families, physicians or employees. Develops, implements and monitors, methods and strategies to achieve high patient satisfaction results.
• Monitors and maintains unit compliance with regulatory (CMS, MO DHSS), accrediting agency (Joint Commission) and Facility policy for patient services, and environmental and personnel safety.
• Assesses the environment and makes recommendations to ensure optimal patient comfort, safety and regulatory compliance.
• Identifies clinical operational needs; manages appropriate level of equipment and supplies and monitors equipment maintenance.
• Monitors processes for ordering Pre-Op/PACU supplies to ensure timeliness, effectiveness and efficiency.
• Recommends capital equipment purchases, as appropriate, to DON and Administrator.
Other
• Maintains current licensure and up-to-date knowledge of new procedures, products and equipment used in acute care nursing. Assesses need for personal growth and development and takes the initiative in seeking opportunities to meet needs.
• Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
• Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
• Communicates with staff, peers, administration, physicians, patients and families in an open, direct and honest manner.
• Identifies potential opportunities for improvement affecting the services provided in the unit and implements solutions with follow-through and communication utilizing the facility quality program structure.
