Salary: £41,000 - 81,000 per year
Requirements: Bachelors degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.We will consider an equivalent combination of education and substantial professional software development experience.Proven experience in software engineering, typically in the range of 3-5 years.Track record of using modern development practices and tools.Strong software development skills.Experience acting in a technical lead or senior developer role on a project or product team.Experience in a highly regulated or secure sector such as defence, aerospace, or government.Cutting-edge AI/ML knowledge.Formal certifications such as Microsoft Azure Developer or AWS Certified Developer, or training in software architecture.Project management or Agile certifications such as Scrum Master or PRINCE2 Agile. Responsibilities: Take technical ownership of delivering secure, high-quality software solutions using advanced AI-enabled development techniques.Translate business requirements into robust applications.Accelerate coding and testing through AI tools.Shape solution designs alongside the AI Platform Specialist and other engineers.Deliver robust software solutions that meet requirements and user needs from design through release.Complete projects on schedule and to a high standard using AI-assisted tools without sacrificing quality.Ensure technical soundness and quality of software outputs by enforcing best practices in coding, testing, and documentation.Embed automated quality checks such as code analysis, security scanning, and test coverage in pipelines.Ensure delivered software is secure, scalable, and aligned with our architecture and compliance standards.Help improve our development capability by piloting and integrating new AI-assisted engineering tools and methodologies.Trial new code-generation tools, testing frameworks, or coding patterns to increase productivity and future-proof our internal engineering.Mentor and technically coach junior developers in code craftsmanship, problem solving, and effective use of AI development tools.Work with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure software is well integrated into the broader AI ecosystem and existing systems.Align on requirements, ensure compatibility with enterprise architecture, and support smooth deployment and handover into operational use.Ensure all development activities and outputs align with our safety, security, and Responsible AI guidelines.Uphold data protection and ethical AI use in code or models and address risk or compliance issues quickly.Drive a results-oriented approach that demonstrates contribution to efficiency, automation, or other mission goals.Meet or exceed performance benchmarks through effective use of AI-enabled methods. We are AWE, and our shared purpose is to help keep the nation safe. This Senior AI-Assisted Software Engineer role sits within our AI Capability Development team and supports our AI Factory mission. The role is based at RG7 4PR, located between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking, and we require mostly onsite working while supporting flexible arrangements where possible, including part-time and varied working hours.
