They will provide training to stakeholders to ensure compliance with applicable rules. They will assist the Finance unit in documenting the applicable rules and regulations in a format that is easily accessible to non-finance staff. The main project for this internship is to develop a comprehensive training program for non-fiscal staff to provide a clear understanding of the rules and expectations when requesting expenditures and updating the procure to pay manual. The intern will also assist with budget development and budget monitoring by downloading and formatting Business Objects reports and preparing them for analysis by analysts. Purpose: To provide hands-on experience in finance auditing, accounting, contract research, and special projects. Proposed Learning Goals: 1. Learn and understand procurement policies, procedures, and processes by assisting with procurement and auditing activities. 2. Learn the City's budget development and budget monitoring cycles and deliverables. 3. Learn the City's Insurance requirements by tracking and monitoring insurance status/expiration dates for recurring vendors and proactively reaching out to vendors for insurance. 4. Build analytical skills by researching accounts payable issues and proposing solutions. 5. Learn about the city's hiring practices and requirements by researching job openings within the City and updating their resumes. 6. Apply or be ready to apply for a Management Trainee position within the City. Proposed Start Date: As soon as practicable. Preferred end dates: 1 year commitment from start date. At least one year is needed to adequately prepare interns to be ready to apply for a management trainee position within the City. An intern may work up to 1,200 cumulative hours with the City of San Diego. Schedule : Time commitment of at least 20 hours a week with flexible working hours between 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Education level: Graduate or undergraduate student majoring in Business Administration, Public Administration, Accounting, Criminal Justice, or a related field. Payment Status: Paid Internship. Internship format: In-Person internship. Possible Regular positions after internship: Clerical Assistant, Account Clerk, Admin Aide, Management Trainee or equivalent position. Job: Student Intern/ Management Intern Hourly Wage: $19.47 to $22.75 The San Diego Police Department will look to fill two additional internships in the near future when the current positions become vacant--A total of three internship positions, including this posting. The Department will hire from the list of applicants from this recruitment. Internship Position (Grants/Special Funds Team) General Description of Duties, Responsibilities, and Projects: The intern will gain expertise with grant and special fund procurement requirements. They will assist the special funds/grants team in assisting stakeholders and requestors to understand the requirements for grant/special funds purchases. They will develop a comprehensive training program for non-fiscal staff to provide a clear understanding of the rules, expectations, and special requirements that relate to grant purchases. They will also monitor Grant/Special Funds contracts to track current spending and expiration dates in a centralized location. The intern will also assist with special funds/grants budget development and budget monitoring by downloading and formatting Business Objects reports and preparing them for analysis by Grants/Special Funds analysts. Purpose: To provide hands-on experience in grant management, finance auditing, accounting, contract research, and special projects. Proposed Learning Goals: 1. Job: Student Intern/ Management Intern Hourly Wage: $19.47 to $22.75 OVERVIEW: The City of San Diego consists of more than 30 operational departments. Internships are available when project-based opportunities arise amongst departments. With general supervision, an internship provides part-time employment opportunities for students enrolled in a continuing education, traditional education, or training program to gain hands-on experience related to their career interests or area of study. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: Duties and responsibilities assigned to interns will vary depending on the department they are assigned; these include but are not limited to: assisting with planning events, conducting research, collecting and analyzing data, assisting with projects, preparing reports and presentations, attending internal and external stakeholders’ meetings, and field work. Work will be project-based, temporary, and not compromise the work of a bargaining unit employee. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 15 ½ years of age or older. Must be a United States citizen or have the current legal right to work in the United States. Requirements vary and are based on the department and specific internship role. Must be enrolled in a continuing education, traditional education, or training program. COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Internships may be paid or unpaid, based on availability of funds. Paid internships will be compensated at an hourly rate consistent with Exhibit C of the Salary Ordinance and commensurate with an applicant’s education level. Not eligible to receive paid vacation leave, paid holidays, and/or any type of City-sponsored insurance. Will participate in the City’s Defined Benefit Plan administered by the San Diego City Employees’ Retirement System (SDCERS). Will receive a free transit pass (including MTS Trolley, MTS Bus, and all Rapid and Rapid Express bus services). Will accrue paid sick leave while employed in a paid internship (eligible for use after 90 days of employment).
