Job summary
This position of Locum Emergency General Surgery Consultant with Upper GI Interest' is designed to help with the evolution and growth of our unit. The new post will be based in the Department of General Surgery and bring the number of EGS Consultants to five.
Weare hoping to appoint a consultant with prior upper GItraining, and we anticipate the new appointees will be able to deliver a range of procedures (elective and emergency) from early on in their appointment, although mentoring will be available for those who require it.
Main duties of the job
The new consultant will alternate emergency cover on a one week on/four weeks off basis with the other four EGS consultants. When covering the emergency service, the post holder will be free of all other elective clinical duties during daytime hours enabling them to see new emergency admissions, as well as to see and manage the existing emergency admissions and operate on patients in a dedicated CEPOD list. There are also weekday Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) appointments overseen by the EGS consultant.
Open and laparoscopic emergency operations are undertaken, including 'hot' laparoscopic cholecystectomies. As the hospital has a large Bariatric Department, any bariatric emergencies should be discussed with a relevant bariatric consultant. The hospital takes part in the NELA audit, to which the post holder will be expected to contribute.
There will be an on-call evening and weekend commitment on a 1 in 13 basis.

Job description Job responsibilities
There will be an average of 8 PAs of direct clinical care, and 2 PAs allocated for supporting professional activities. As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with and support other clinical, medical, professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality, safe health care to patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following:
the provision of a first-class service
effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
active involvement in undergraduate and post graduate teaching and training
undertaking all work in accordance with trust policies and procedures including the Code of Behaviour
conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of Homertons business plans contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development.
TeCClinical Responsibilities The post-holder will be expected to lead the appropriate and safe management of patients under his or her care, including elective and emergency general surgery patients.
An office, computer, and appropriate secretarial support will be provided.
2. Teaching and academic activity The post holder will participate in the postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training program within the hospital. Research activity will be encouraged.
3. Management and clinical audit The post holder will be expected to contribute to the development of the service within the directorate. The appointee will be expected to take part in the management and routine administrative duties associated with the care of their patients, running of clinical departments and the supervision of junior medical staff and specialist nurses. In addition, he or she will be expected to adopt an active role in the wider management arena within the directorate where appropriate.
The department has a strong focus on clinical audit and clinical risk management and there are regular clinical audit meetings and case review meetings which the appointee will be expected to attend when possible. The Trust is committed to developing a clear approach to clinical governance and the post holder will be expected to play a key role in this area, participating in the development and implementation of specific initiatives when appropriate.
The Trust is committed to implementing the new deal and EWTD for junior doctors, particularly on junior doctors hours. All Trust consultants are responsible for ensuring that the hours targets are met and timetabled educational programmes are maintained.
4. Continuing professional development Continuing professional development is an integral part of a consultant post. The appointee will be encouraged to ensure that his/her full entitlement to study leave is taken. The appointee will be expected to attend an annual job plan review with the Clinical Director of the service.
