Position Description: The Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month tenure-track, Assistant Professor position to begin Sept 1, 2027.

About the College: Founded in 1925 as one of the university's four original colleges, the College of Arts & Sciences is comprised of 15 departments, offering a wide variety of courses and programs in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and natural sciences. The College has more than 10,000 students enrolled representing more than a quarter of the overall Texas Tech University student population while maintaining a 22:1 student to faculty ratio.
About the Department/School/Area: The Texas Tech Philosophy Department, ranked among the top 10 Philosophy MA programs in the nation, is committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, research, and service to the Texas Tech community. Our graduate and upper division classes are small, and students can expect to receive a great deal of individual attention from faculty. Members of the faculty mentor both graduate student teaching and individual research projects, including assisting students in preparing papers for conferences or for PhD applications. Since our faculty specializations reflect a wide range of research interests, programs of study can reflect breadth as well as depth. We have particular strengths in Epistemology, Ethics, History of Philosophy, Metaethics, Philosophy of Language, and Philosophy of Mind. Our colloquium series allows students to meet directly with visiting philosophers of national and international renown. In all of this, we are committed to preparing students for the profession of philosophy, as well as for other professions such as law and public service.
Major/Essential Functions: In line with TTU’s strategic priorities to engage and empower a dynamic student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with a breadth of student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.
As a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy, you will be expected to: 1) contribute to the teaching mission of the department; 2) mentor graduate students; 3) develop a record of peer-reviewed research; 4) provide service to the department, college, and university.
Faculty Qualifications: • PhD or similar degree in Philosophy or related field by the time of appointment. • Evidence of research innovation and impact in social/political philosophy, philosophy of law, or ethics as displayed in written, presented, and published work. • Evidence of teaching excellence as displayed in the teaching portfolio.
Preferred Qualifications: In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: 1) Research interest in Social/Political philosophy as evidenced by written, presented, or published work. 2) Ability and willingness to teach in a future philosophy, politics, and economics program 3) Ability to serve additional teaching needs of the department by complementing the existing teaching strengths of the department. 3) Ability to contribute service-wise to the department, university, and profession through for example, advising, refereeing, and committee work.

Pay Statement: Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as the institutional pay plan.
