SUPERVISION OF SCAFFOLDING OPERATIONS
• Supervise and coordinate Scaffolders and Scaffolding Assistants on site.
• Allocate daily tasks and manpower according to project requirements.
• Ensure scaffolding activities are carried out according to approved plans, drawings and specifications.
• Supervise the erection, modification, extension and dismantling of scaffolding.
• Ensure scaffolding components are correctly assembled and secured.
• Ensure platforms, access points, guardrails, toe boards, bracing and supports are correctly installed.
• Ensure scaffolding is suitable for its intended use and loading requirements.
• Monitor work progress and ensure daily production targets are achieved.
• Coordinate scaffolding activities with other construction trades and site personnel.
• Ensure work areas are properly prepared before scaffolding activities commence.
HEALTH, SAFETY & LEGAL COMPLIANCE
• Ensure all scaffolding activities are conducted in a safe manner.
• Comply with applicable South African Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations and company safety procedures.
• Ensure workers use the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Conduct or participate in daily toolbox talks and pre-task briefings.
• Ensure appropriate risk assessments and safe work procedures are followed.
• Identify and report unsafe working conditions immediately.
• Stop work where an unsafe condition or activity presents a significant risk.
• Ensure appropriate fall-protection measures are implemented when working at height.
• Ensure scaffolders are properly trained, competent and authorised for the work being performed.
• Maintain good housekeeping around scaffolding work areas.
• Report incidents, near misses, injuries and unsafe acts to management.
• Ensure scaffolding is not used where it has been identified as unsafe or incomplete.
SCAFFOLD INSPECTION & QUALITY CONTROL
• Conduct visual checks of scaffolding during erection and throughout the work process.
• Ensure scaffolding is inspected by the appropriately designated/competent person in accordance with company procedures and applicable requirements.
• Ensure scaffolds are appropriately tagged or identified according to the company's scaffold-control system.
• Prevent unauthorised use of incomplete, damaged or unsafe scaffolding.
• Ensure defective or damaged scaffold components are removed from service.
• Check that platforms, access ladders, guardrails, toe boards, braces, ties and foundations are correctly installed.
• Ensure scaffolding remains stable and adequately supported.
• Monitor scaffold condition throughout the project.
• Ensure alterations to scaffolding are properly controlled and authorised.
• Maintain required inspection and handover documentation.
TEAM MANAGEMENT
• Lead, motivate and manage scaffolding teams effectively.
• Allocate personnel according to skills, experience and project requirements.
• Monitor employee attendance, productivity and conduct.
• Provide on-the-job guidance and coaching to Scaffolders and Assistants.
• Identify training and development requirements.
• Ensure employees understand their daily tasks and safety requirements.
• Address minor disciplinary and performance issues in accordance with company procedures.
• Promote teamwork, accountability and safe working practices.
• Communicate site instructions clearly to the scaffolding team.
MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT
• Ensure scaffolding materials are available before work commences.
• Check scaffold components for damage, excessive wear, corrosion or defects.
• Prevent damaged or unsuitable components from being used.
• Control the movement and storage of scaffolding materials on site.
• Minimise loss, damage and unnecessary wastage.
• Ensure scaffolding components are correctly stacked and stored.
• Monitor the use and condition of tools and equipment.
• Report shortages, damaged equipment and material requirements to the Site Manager.
PROJECT PLANNING & PRODUCTIVITY
• Review daily and weekly scaffolding requirements.
• Plan manpower and resources according to the project programme.
• Coordinate scaffolding requirements with the Site Manager and other supervisors.
• Ensure scaffolding is available when required by construction teams.
• Monitor progress against project schedules.
• Identify potential delays and communicate them to management.
• Ensure efficient utilisation of labour, equipment and materials.
• Assist with estimating manpower and material requirements for upcoming work.
• Ensure completed scaffolding is handed over in accordance with project requirements.
DOCUMENTATION & REPORTING
• Complete daily site reports and production records.
• Record labour attendance and hours worked.
• Record scaffolding erected, modified and dismantled.
• Report material usage and shortages.
• Maintain scaffold inspection and handover records as required.
• Report incidents, defects and safety concerns.
• Provide progress updates to the Site Manager / Project Manager.
• Ensure required permits, checklists and documentation are completed before work commences where applicable.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position will primarily be based on construction, industrial or other project sites and may involve:
• Working outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
• Working at significant heights.
• Climbing ladders and scaffold structures.
• Standing and walking for extended periods.
• Manual handling of scaffolding components.
• Working around construction equipment and other contractors.
• Working in confined or restricted areas where applicable.
• Working extended hours, weekends or shutdown periods depending on project requirements.
HEALTH & SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Scaffolding Foreman has a direct responsibility to ensure that all employees under their supervision work safely and in accordance with company and site requirements.
The Foreman must:
• Lead by example in all safety matters.
• Never permit unsafe scaffolding to be used.
• Ensure workers are competent and appropriately trained.
• Ensure required PPE is worn.
• Ensure pre-task planning and risk assessments are completed.
• Report hazards and incidents immediately.
• Maintain good housekeeping.
• Ensure work is stopped where conditions become unsafe.
• Cooperate with the Health & Safety Officer, Site Manager and other authorised personnel.
• Matric
• Minimum 3–5 years' relevant scaffolding experience, with supervisory/foreman experience preferred
• Recognised scaffolding training and/or certification.
• Working-at-heights / fall-protection training will be advantageous.
• Experience working on construction, industrial, mining, commercial or infrastructure projects
