POSITION SUMMARY: The Special Education Assistive Technology Specialist provides districtwide evaluation, consultation, training, and technical support to improve access, communication, participation, and independence for students with disabilities. Conducts Assistive Technology (AT) evaluations and classroom consultations; supports the selection, implementation, and monitoring of AT and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices, software, adaptive materials, and low-tech solutions; and provides training and coaching to students, staff, and families. Manages district AT resources, including specialized equipment, software, licenses, communication devices, adaptive classroom resources, and inventory. Collaborates with Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams, related service providers, district departments, vendors, and outside agencies to support effective implementation of assistive technology services. This position reports to the Director of the Department of Exceptional Students or designee. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Conducts AT evaluations and classroom consultations; reviews data and observes students to identify barriers to access, communication, participation, and independence. Uses feature matching to recommend support; prepares reports; participates in IEP and reevaluation meetings; and assists teams with documenting and monitoring AT devices and services. Supports the selection, trial, customization, implementation, and monitoring of AT and AAC systems. Trains students in assigned technology and supports communication devices, applications, switches, alternative access, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and other accessibility tools. Collaborates with Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, teachers, and other specialists. Provides districtwide and school-based training, modeling, coaching, and technical assistance for teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, administrators, families, and students. Supports integration of AT into instruction and classroom routines and provides follow-up to promote effective implementation. Develops and supports low- and no-tech solutions for adaptive and specialized classrooms, including visual supports, communication boards, adapted materials, task supports, and alternative access tools. Develops and maintains AT/AAC demonstration, trial, and classroom kits for staff and student use. Manages AT software, licenses, devices, specialized equipment, accessories, and resource kits. Maintains inventory; coordinates assignment, transfer, repair, replacement, and redistribution; configures and troubleshoots devices/software; and collaborates with Technology and vendors regarding technical needs. Maintains records of evaluations, consultations, equipment, training, and services. Analyzes AT utilization and needs; supports district procedures and resources; researches emerging practices; collaborates with district teams and outside agencies; and advises leadership on purchasing, replacement, and training priorities. All other duties, as assigned and required, in order to perform the above services. KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in an education related field required. Bachelor's Degree in an area of Special Education or General Education with a teaching certificate in an area of Special Education preferred. A demonstrated knowledge, history and usage of technology currently in Special Education programs. Specific areas of expertise and knowledge should include but not be limited to augmentative alternative devices, adaptive/access devices, computing devices, and specialized software along with knowledge of implementation strategies within specialized disability areas. Makes decisions and final recommendations which routinely affect the activities of others. Hold a valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) professional certificate in Special Education and valid certification as an Assistive Technology Specialist. Possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license. Moderate level of judgment: supervisor is available to review established broad objectives and approve executive-level decisions. Requires regular, frequent contact with internal personnel of influence and decision-making responsibility to discuss issues of moderate importance. Excellent interpersonal skills are required for interacting and working with various levels of individuals. Applies technology concepts to improve efficiency and effectiveness of District; must be proficient with computer. Responsibility for the Welfare of Others: Constant (Daily) - to exercise the duty of care and protection of the health, safety, security, welfare, well-being, and best interests of the district's various stakeholders. Normal office setting. Requires travel daily to multiple school sites. Light duty - On most occasions sitting at a desk or table; intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. Light to moderate lifting or carrying of 35 lbs. or less; may occasionally be required to assist in lifting or carrying up 100 lbs. Requires physical ability to implement physical restraint techniques in accordance with adopted district policies.
