WHITEFISH SCHOOL DISTRICT POSITION DESCRIPTION AREA: Whitefish Middle School Coach REPORTS TO: Assistant Principal, Principal SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT The Coach is responsible for directing a total sports program while providing instruction in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training. The coach instructs individual participants in the skills necessary for effective performance, directs a regular program of practice in season, and fosters moral values, pride of accomplishment, academic priority, and self-discipline in student-athletes. All programs must operate within the policies of the School Board and District Administration and within the principles of Montana High School Association (MHSA) and Western A Conference By-laws. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS Minimum Qualifications:
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certifications: Ability to obtain a certified First Aid and CPR card with AED training.
• Compliance: Must meet NFHS Concussion for Sports Training on time.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Valid Montana teacher certification and employment within the Whitefish School District.
• Previous successful coaching or competition experience in the assigned sport.
• Ability to handle stressful situations and maintain confidentiality regarding student and employment matters.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to): Program & Staff Leadership
• Skill & Strategy Instruction: Coach individual participants in the specific skills, rules, techniques, and strategies necessary for effective performance in the activity.
• Program Philosophy: Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, physical training, and techniques for the entire middle school program.
Student Welfare, Conduct & Sportsmanship
• Behavior & Sportsmanship: Maintain discipline and sportsmanlike conduct of all participants, personally demonstrate cooperative conduct, and enforce district policies uniformly when disciplining participants.
• Academic Priority: Give constant attention to student-athletes' grades, conduct, and academic priorities.
• Injury Reporting: Complete required injury reports for all athletic injuries and communicate immediately with the athletic trainer.
Supervision & Facility Safety
• Direct Supervision: Oversee safety conditions for students and the facility/area at all times students are present. Be physically present in the facility, on buses, in locker rooms, and during travel whenever supervision is required, ensuring the coach or a designee is the last to leave.
Administrative, Equipment & Financial Duties
• Contest Planning: Work closely with the Assistant Principal in planning practice schedules, interscholastic contests, facilities usage, and transportation.
• Budget & Equipment: Follow District procurement procedures and operate within the budget. Share in full responsibility for marking, issuing, distributing, collecting, storing, reconditioning, and maintaining an annual inventory of equipment, recommending equipment and supply purchases to administration as appropriate.
• Compliance Documentation: In concert with the Assistant Principal, maintain assigned paperwork and submit required reports on time, ensuring all athletes have insurance, physicals, and paid activity fees prior to participation.
Public Relations & Communication
• Communication: Effectively communicate, orally and in writing, with students, parents, staff, fans, and the community in general. Organize parent meetings and promote the sport within the school to non-participating athletes and youth feeder programs.
WORKING CONDITIONS & DEMANDS Equipment Used:
• Utilize stopwatches, calculators, computers, copy/fax machines, telephones/voicemail, score-keeping equipment, and other tools germane to the sport or activity.
Work Environment:
• The employee constantly works around others, works with the public, and works inside and outside. The noise level in the work environment varies, but is frequently loud. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
Physical Demands:
• Continuous: Standing and using hand strength to grasp tools.
• Frequent: Walking and bending or twisting at the neck and waist.
• Occasional: Reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, and lifting/moving up to 50 pounds.
• Vision Abilities: Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
Mental/Motor Demands:
• Rarely performs routine work; exercises flexibility to shift from one task to another with guidance frequently available.
• Frequently works within time constraints and must maintain attentiveness intensity.
• Frequently involved in social interactions requiring oral and written communication. Reasoning and exercising judgment are constantly used/required on the job.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT AND EVALUATION
• Terms: Salary, stipend, working conditions, and benefits are determined by District Policy, Federal and State Law, and available funding. Stipend is in agreement with WEA Master Agreement.
• Evaluations: Performance will be evaluated on forms by the Assistant Principal or administration.
