Job Title: Certified School Nurse / Registered Nurse – Field Trips & Overnight Field Trips Location: Lehigh Valley Academy Position Type: On-Call / As Needed Compensation: $32 per hour Job Summary Lehigh Valley Academy is seeking qualified Certified School Nurses (CSNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs) to provide nursing support for student field trips, including local day trips, extended-day activities, and overnight field trips. The nurse will accompany students and staff during scheduled trips and provide appropriate nursing care, medication administration, emergency response, and health-related support throughout the duration of the trip. This position is ideal for a nursing professional interested in flexible, occasional assignments supporting students outside of the traditional school setting. Key Responsibilities
• Field Trip Nursing Support: Accompany students and staff on day trips, extended field trips, and overnight trips as assigned.
• Medication Administration: Safely administer prescribed medications in accordance with physician orders, parent/guardian authorization, school procedures, and applicable Pennsylvania requirements.
• Student Health Needs: Provide appropriate nursing care and monitoring for students with identified medical conditions, allergies, asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders, or other health needs.
• Emergency Response: Assess illnesses or injuries and provide first aid, emergency nursing care, and appropriate referrals when necessary.
• Emergency Preparedness: Review relevant student health information, emergency action plans, medication requirements, and trip procedures prior to departure.
• Communication: Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, school staff, trip leaders, and emergency medical providers when appropriate.
• Documentation: Maintain accurate documentation of medications administered, health concerns, treatment provided, and significant incidents occurring during the trip.
• Confidentiality: Protect student health information and maintain confidentiality in accordance with applicable laws and school procedures.
• Collaboration: Work closely with LVA's Certified School Nurses and trip leaders to ensure appropriate planning and continuity of care for students participating in school-sponsored activities.
• Student Safety: Support a safe and inclusive environment while participating as a member of the field trip team.
Qualifications
• Current, valid Pennsylvania Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
• Pennsylvania Certified School Nurse certification preferred but not required for all assignments.
• Current CPR/AED certification required.
• Experience in school nursing, pediatrics, emergency care, community health, or a related setting preferred.
• Experience administering medications and managing chronic student health conditions preferred.
• Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to medical emergencies.
• Strong judgment, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with school personnel.
• Willingness and ability to travel with student groups, including participation in overnight trips when accepting an overnight assignment.
• Ability to maintain student confidentiality and demonstrate appropriate professional boundaries.
• Must meet all applicable Pennsylvania school employment clearance requirements.
Schedule Assignments are offered on an as-needed basis and may include:
• Local field trips
• Full-day or extended-day field trips
• Evening activities
• Multi-day and overnight field trips
Nurses may accept assignments based upon their individual availability. Overnight assignments may involve travel outside the Lehigh Valley and, depending upon the trip, outside Pennsylvania.
