Network Waitaki is looking for a Trainee Line Mechanic to join our Contracting team in Oamaru. You will work alongside experienced Line Mechanics while completing the training and practical experience needed to become a registered Line Mechanic.
This is a permanent, full-time opportunity for someone who enjoys hands-on work, wants to keep learning and is ready to be part of a team that helps keep communities connected.
What you will learn
As a Trainee Line Mechanic, you will develop practical skills across the construction and maintenance of electricity networks, including:
• overhead lines and associated equipment
• underground cables and equipment
• distribution and substation work
• the safe operation of vehicles, plant and equipment
• industry safety practices and procedures
• working effectively as part of a field crew
You will complete a structured Level 4 industry training programme that will take approximately 2 ½ years to complete, combining on-the-job learning with off-site block courses. You will be supported by a Trade Coach, supervisors and experienced people across the Contracting team.
About you
You do not need previous electricity industry experience. We are looking for someone who:
• wants to build a long-term career in the electricity industry
• enjoys practical, hands-on work
• is comfortable working outdoors in different weather conditions
• is comfortable working at heights
• is physically fit and able to safely perform the role
• listens, follows instructions and asks questions when unsure
• communicates well and works positively with others
• takes safety seriously
• is reliable and willing to learn
• has suitable literacy, numeracy and Mathematics skills
• preferably holds a full New Zealand Class 1 driver licence
You will be required to obtain relevant heavy vehicle licence classes as you progress through your training. We will provide the necessary training and support.

Things to know
Because of the nature of our work, you may sometimes be required to:
• work outside standard hours during major faults, emergencies or community events
• travel outside North Otago
• stay away from home for short periods
• attend off-site block courses
The successful candidate will be required to complete Network Waitaki’s pre-employment requirements, which may include medical, drug and alcohol, and Ministry of Justice checks. Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand.
