A bit about the role Introduction The Disciplinary and Grievance Panel (D&G panel) is an independent panel to support British Rowing in dealing with matters referred to it by regions, clubs or individuals. Such matters may be referred to the Disciplinary and Grievance Panel by the Board of British Rowing or the Head of Governance. The principal purpose of the Disciplinary and Grievance Panel is to ensure that the national governing body handles all grievance and disciplinary matters fairly and equitably and in accordance with its regulations. The Disciplinary and Grievance Panel reports to the Board of British Rowing . It comprises a minimum of eight people whose appointment is approved by the Board, having due regard to the mix of skills necessary for the effective discharge of its duties. A knowledge of sports, or rowing in particular, is not an essential requirement for Panel Membership. Membership of the Disciplinary and Grievance Panel is a voluntary role, no employee of British Rowing may be a Panel Member Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. Purpose of the Disciplinary and Grievance Panel The primary function of the Panel is to resolve grievances, appeals and other disciplinary matters referred to it. The Panel also acts as an Appeals Board for non-selection for International or Olympic representation as selected by British Rowing. This aspect of its work operates to a very strict timeframe and requires the ability to review procedures and processes expeditiously in the context of selection. The Panel is tasked with the making of recommendations to the Board via the CEO as may be necessary to ensure the effective and equitable handling of disciplinary and grievance matters. It may also be asked to provide assistance and/or guidance to British Rowing members, clubs, competitions and regions from time to time regarding the regulations. A bit about you Personal specification Members of the Panel are required to be experienced in judicial matters and procedures, for example as barristers, lawyers, solicitors or Justices of the Peace (who will need to have a minimum of five years experience). This is required as the Panel operates in a quasi-judicial manner on all matters. Experience in disciplinary or grievance work would be advantageous. Panel members will be expected to attend meetings of the Disciplinary and Grievance Panel as required, which typically take place twice a year (these are generally held online). In addition, Panel Members may be required to act as a member of a Panel established to review a particular matter, which could be held in London or in a region or online. Such Panels normally would expect to sit for one day to hear evidence or review written submissions. Panel members will be expected to maintain high standards, compliance with recognised good practice guidelines, and comply with relevant requirements of British Rowing.
