Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Winchman without more than normal supervision. Duties include: operating electric or hydraulic winches to stabilize and maneuver a mat boat barge during mattress launches, selecting appropriate greases or lubricants for winches, and making minor repairs. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) Ability To Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle) Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Physical Efforts: Work requires substantial physical effort when handling equipment and machinery. Work may involve long periods of standing, lifting, climbing, and crouching and walking. Working Conditions: Work is performed outside in all kinds of weather; gloves are soiled during cleaning, maintenance and servicing of winch, and noise is frequently difficult to talk above. The most typical hazard of this job is backlash from broken ruble and burns from steam lines.
Major DutiesOperate diesel winches on mat sinking mooring barge.Remain alert to sudden changes in desired movement of plant, workers in and around winch cables and lines, cable entanglements, and unusual strain on winch and winch cables, to prevent injury to personnel, cable breakage, and damage to equipment.Keep cables clear of drift.Clean winch and winch area; grease and lubricate moving parts of winch; make minor repairs and assist mechanics.
