Who are our Expert Volunteers?
A hallmark of USP's standards is that they are determined by independent scientific experts. USP Expert Volunteers are selected based on their individual expertise and experience and use their best personal, professional, and scientific judgment to work collaboratively on setting standards. USP Expert Volunteers must agree to disclose conflicts of interest and to uphold standards of conduct that preserve the integrity of the standard setting process.
2025-2030 Focus Area:
The purpose of this Expert Panel (EP) is to develop, validate, and recommend new specifications, analytical tests, and related scientific documents relevant to USP for dietary proteins. This work will support the development of new, and modernization of current, FCC monograph(s), FCC Identity Standard(s), General Test(s) and Assay(s), or Appendix. This EP may also support the development of USP reference standards (RS) and other analytical reference materials that will be designed to help users determine the authenticity (including purity) and quality of dietary protein ingredients sold internationally for use in foods.
2025-2030 KEY ISSUES
• Prioritize emerging dietary proteins where FCC standards can address identity, quality, purity, and authenticity needs.
• Address adulteration, substitution, mislabeling, and limitations of nonspecific protein testing.
• Develop fit-for-purpose analytical methods for protein characterization, source identification, purity, and adulteration detection.
• Support reference standards and analytical materials needed for method implementation and verification.
• Develop or modernize FCC monographs, identity standards, General Tests and Assays, and appendices.
• Align with external standards activities and support stakeholder outreach to promote adoption of FCC protein standards.
Required Expertise:
Protein chemistry, characterization, and ingredient quality; OR Analytical method development, validation, and specifications; OR Protein authenticity, purity, adulteration testing, and reference materials; OR Regulatory, standards, manufacturing, and industry application expertise.
