Gastroenterologist (GI Physician) Job Description
Position Title: Gastroenterologist (GI Physician)
Department: Gastroenterology
Reports To: Medical Director / Chief of Gastroenterology
Position Summary
The Gastroenterologist is responsible for diagnosing, treating, and managing disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and digestive system. The physician provides comprehensive outpatient and inpatient care, performs endoscopic procedures, collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, and promotes high-quality, patient-centered care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Care
• Evaluate, diagnose, and treat diseases and conditions affecting the digestive system.
• Manage patients with conditions such as:
• Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
• Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis)
• Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
• Liver diseases and hepatitis
• Pancreatic disorders
• Gastrointestinal bleeding
• Colon polyps and colorectal cancer
• Develop individualized treatment plans and coordinate ongoing patient care.
• Provide consultations for primary care physicians and specialists.
Procedural Responsibilities
• Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including:
• Colonoscopy
• Upper endoscopy (EGD)
• Flexible sigmoidoscopy
• Capsule endoscopy
• Esophageal dilation
• Hemostasis procedures
• PEG tube placement
• Interpret pathology, laboratory, imaging, and procedure results.
• Maintain procedural competency and adhere to quality and safety standards.
Inpatient and Call Coverage
• Provide inpatient consultations as required.
• Participate in assigned call coverage schedule.
• Respond to urgent patient issues and hospital consult requests in a timely manner.
• Collaborate with hospitalists, surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, and primary care providers.
Quality and Compliance
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR).
• Comply with organizational policies, CMS regulations, and accreditation requirements.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and performance metrics.
• Support patient safety and infection prevention standards.
Patient Education
• Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, preventive care, and lifestyle modifications.
• Promote colorectal cancer screening and preventive health measures.
• Encourage patient engagement and adherence to treatment plans.
Qualifications
Education
• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
Training
• Completion of an accredited Internal Medicine Residency.
• Completion of an accredited Gastroenterology Fellowship.
Licensure and Certifications
• Current state medical license or eligibility for licensure.
• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Gastroenterology.
• DEA registration and controlled substance certification as required.

• Advanced endoscopy training (ERCP and/or EUS).
• Experience in a multispecialty medical group.

• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain referring provider relationships.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand for extended periods while performing procedures.
• Manual dexterity required for endoscopic procedures.
• Ability to respond to emergent clinical situations.
Typical Schedule
• Outpatient clinic: 2-3 days per week
• Endoscopy/procedure sessions: 2-3 days per week
• Hospital rounding and consults as assigned
• Participation in shared call rotation
