About this role

Goodwell Investments is a pioneer in impact investment, dedicated to generating opportunities for all, by focusing on inclusive growth in sectors providing basic goods and services, and by creating income-generation opportunities for underserved communities in both Africa and India. Since 2006, Goodwell has managed five private equity funds with over €310m in capital raised. We invest in early and growth-stage businesses in India and Africa and our 35+ portfolio companies reach over 330 million people across 47 countries globally.

Our investors are a unique mix of private investors, family offices, development finance institutions, banks, pension funds, and other institutional investors. Goodwell is looking for an experienced professional to become part of the Investment and Valuation Committee (IC) of its uMunthu II fund. The fund provides risk capital and hands-on support to impact-driven small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to promote inclusive, fair growth in Africa.

The Role

The IC will decide on investment and divestment issues of the Fund in line with the investment strategy. The Committee will also annually review the entire investment portfolio and the valuations proposed by the Fund Manager. The IC is currently composed of two Managing Partners of Goodwell, and three independent members. The Committee is chaired by one of the independent members. We are currently recruiting (1) independent Member to join the team.

Commitment

• The committee will meet whenever a new investment is made or an investment is exited, the average number of meetings will be 4 annually.

• Generally, these meetings will be online. In-person meetings will only take place incidentally.

• Time spent at IC meetings including reading and preparation time is estimated to be 8-9 days a year.

• The position is initially for a period of 4 years.

Qualifications

• Proven track record in an executive leadership role.

• Strong diplomatic, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.

• Deep local market understanding, gained from years of living and working in an African Region (SA, EA or WA).

• Extensive experience with development finance and impact investment preferably in the agricultural sector.

• Demonstrable understanding of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) themes.

• Proficiency in Investment Banking, corporate finance, and valuations, or a commitment to deepening these skills to support the committee's long-term technical needs.

• Availability to allocate sufficient time to fulfill duties as a committee member.

• Ability to travel incidentally for in-person meetings.

An appropriate remuneration will be provided to the IC member.
