Under the general direction of a licensed care giver, the ASL Clinical Interpreter facilitates communication between physicians, nurses, volunteers, non-clinical staff, patients, patients' families and the community. Responsibilities include interpretation, session statistics, service rounds, special projects, office duties, and assisting volunteers within the Medical Center. The Clinical Interpreter position requires a high level of expertise and professionalism in interpreting and translating techniques, and performs all job duties with sensitivity and attention to the age and developmental issues of the patient populations served that include: the hearing impaired; limited English; and non-English speaking populations. Provides care to special patient populations and patients with diverse cultural backgrounds. Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state and local requirements and accrediting bodies. Exercises independent problem-solving abilities. Will work in a highly visible, very active environment. Must be able to work a flexible work schedule.
Principal Responsibilities:
• Interprets between English and ASL for Cedars-Sinai staff and patient/family while maintaining confidentiality, safeguarding the patient’s interests, and completing the appropriate documentation after each session. • Completes written translations (as needed), such as instructions, letters from quality assurance, education materials, schedules, questions from patient, and other translations, assuring that the content is conveyed accurately and efficiently. • Completes special projects or other tasks on a timely basis as per departmental guidelines. • Adheres to departmental guidelines and adapts to changes in unit when policies and procedures change. • Functions as a resource to physicians, nursing staff, and others staff members for clinical interpretation. • Processes and maintains each session documentation as needed. • Provides appropriate referral/triage regarding identified remote medical interpreting program(s).
Education:
• High School Diploma/GED, (Minimum) • Bachelor's Degree, Linguistics, foreign languages, translation and interpretation, communication or related field. (Preferred) Work Experience:
• 2 years experience as an ASL traslator in a health care environment. (minimum) Licenses and Certifications:
• Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) National Interpreter Certification (NIC). (Preferred) • Medical Center Interpreter Services Language Proficiency Assessment/Training Program. 90 Days (Minimum) • Interpreter Training Program. 90 Days (Minimum)
