About this role

Job summary

Are you a confident leader with specialist knowledge of overseas patient charging regulations? We are seeking an Overseas and Private Patient Manager to lead our team and ensure chargeable patients are identified, supported and billed accurately across our Trust sites.

As the Trust's lead for overseas visitor legislation, you will interpret complex regulations and national guidance, make robust decisions on chargeable status and advise clinical and non-clinical colleagues. You will manage private patient arrangements, work closely with Credit Control to support timely income recovery, and ensure invoices, records and eligible EHIC claims are accurate and complete.

You will manage, motivate and develop the Overseas and Private Patient Team, coordinate workloads, monitor performance and deliver specialist training across the organisation. The role involves sensitive conversations with patients and families, requiring empathy, professionalism and sound judgement.

You will need management or supervisory experience, excellent communication and influencing skills, and be educated to degree level, or equivalent experience. Experience within an overseas or private patient team and using hospital administration systems would be advantageous.

This is an office-based job due to the role being patient facing. It is expected that the successful candidate will spend most of their time either based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital or Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

- Degree in a finance or business discipline, or equivalent experience. - GCSE level or equivalent in English and Maths, grades A-C. - Evidence of further professional development gained through extensive on-the-job experience and specialist NHSI training courses, or equivalent postgraduate-level learning.

Experience Essential

- In-depth knowledge of regulations, guidance and legislation relating to overseas patients. - Staff management or supervisory experience. - Experience applying regulations, legislation and guidance to real-life situations and determining the correct course of action. - Complex problem-solving experience. - Experience dealing with members of the public in contentious situations. - Extensive debt collection experience. - IT literate, with in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel.

Desirable

- Experience using hospital administration systems. - Experience working within an overseas or private patient team.

Additional Criteria Essential

- Well-developed leadership and coaching skills. - Ability to manage, motivate and develop a team. - Ability to communicate complex information to senior managers and clinicians to initiate change. - Excellent communication and influencing skills. - Excellent organisation and coordination skills. - Highly developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to empathise with vulnerable or distressed patients and families. - Highly numerate. - Occasional travel between Trust sites is required; own transport is not necessary.
