About this role

Job summary

Are you an experienced and inspirational Consultant Clinical Psychologist seeking an opportunity to shape and lead specialist eating disorder services for children and young people?

RDaSH is seeking a Consultant Clinical Psychologist to provide senior clinical, professional and strategic leadership within our Children and Young People's Eating Disorders Service (CEDS).

This is a highly influential consultant-level role with responsibility for advancing psychological practice across the service, supporting the management of complex clinical presentations and contributing to the strategic development of safe, effective and accessible care. Working as a senior member of the multidisciplinary team, you will provide expert psychological oversight, strengthen formulation-led practice and lead improvements in quality, outcomes and patient and family experience.

You will play a key role in developing the psychological workforce, influencing service and pathway development, and ensuring that the needs and lived experiences of children, young people and families remain central to clinical practice and strategic decision-making.

Main duties of the job

Provide strategic, clinical and professional leadership for psychological practice within the Children and Young People's Eating Disorders Service. Deliver and oversee highly specialist assessment, formulation and intervention for children and young people with complex eating disorders and co-occurring mental health needs.

Lead on complex case consultation, risk assessment, treatment planning and multidisciplinary decision-making, promoting formulation-led, trauma-informed care. Provide expert supervision, consultation, teaching and mentorship to psychologists and the wider multidisciplinary workforce.

Provide professional leadership for psychology staff, supporting workforce development, governance, recruitment and CPD. Lead service development, pathway redesign, quality improvement, audit, research and service evaluation to improve access, safety, experience and outcomes.

Work collaboratively with children, young people, families, colleagues and partner agencies to deliver compassionate, inclusive and person-centred care. Champion co-production and ensure lived experience shapes service delivery and development.

Provide expert advice to senior leaders on clinical quality, workforce development, service transformation and the management of clinical complexity and risk, while contributing to the strategic development of children and young people's services.

Qualifications Essential

oDoctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) oHCPC registered practitioner psychologist oContinued professional development through structured self-study, specialist clinical supervision, and/or relevant combination of short courses

Desirable

oPost-doctoral training in one or more additional specialist areas of psychological practice. oPost-qualification training in an evidence-based psychological, family or systemic intervention for eating disorders.

Experience Essential

Significant post-qualification experience as a clinical psychologist working with children, young people and families, including experience within an eating-disorder service or a closely related specialist children and young people's mental-health setting. Highly specialist psychological assessment, formulation and evidence based intervention with children and young people with complex mental-health needs and their families. Experience of assessing and managing complex psychological, physical-health, safeguarding, self-harm and suicide risk within multidisciplinary and multi-agency systems. Experience of working as a senior clinician and contributing to complex multidisciplinary decision-making. Experience of working within multi agency teams and contributing to multi agency service development. Experience of providing clinical and professional leadership, consultation, supervision and training. Experience of leading or contributing significantly to service development, pathway redesign, audit, research, evaluation or quality improvement. Experience of professional oversight or management of qualified and pre qualified psychological professionals

Desirable

Experience within a specialist children and young people's eating-disorder service. Experience of working with ARFID or eating disorders alongside autism, ADHD or other neurodevelopmental differences. Experience of developing or leading a specialist eating-disorder pathway. Experience of developing or leading a specialist eating-disorder pathway Experience of multi-family, group or parent-focused interventions.

Knowledge Essential

Highly developed knowledge of the psychological assessment, formulation and treatment of children and young people with eating disorders and their families. Knowledge of evidence-based psychological, family and systemic interventions for eating disorders. Knowledge of the physical-health risks associated with eating disorders and their interaction with psychological distress, eating-disorder behaviours and family or systemic factors. Knowledge of the impact of autism, ADHD, sensory and communication needs and trauma on eating-disorder presentation and treatment. Doctoral-level knowledge of clinical psychology, research design and methodology. Knowledge of relevant legislation, professional standards, national guidance and their implications for clinical practice, safeguarding and professional leadership. Highly developed knowledge of specialist psychological assessment and therapy, including the ability to integrate different theoretical models.

Desirable

Knowledge of specialist approaches to ARFID and eating disorders co-occurring with neurodevelopmental differences.

Skills Essential

Ability to integrate complex psychological, developmental, physical-health, risk, family and systemic information into a coherent formulation and multidisciplinary treatment plan, including where information is incomplete or professional views differ. Ability to communicate highly complex and sensitive information clearly and compassionately to children, young people, families, professionals and senior leaders. Ability to lead psychologically informed multidisciplinary care and influence practice beyond direct clinical work. Ability to provide high-quality clinical and professional supervision, consultation, teaching and reflective practice. Ability to lead service development, audit, research, evaluation and quality improvement and use data to inform change. Ability to work autonomously, prioritise competing demands and exercise sound professional judgement. Ability to develop effective working relationships across professional, organisational and agency boundaries. Ability to adapt practice to developmental, communication, sensory, cognitive, cultural and relational needs and promote equitable access and outcomes.
