About the job:
This role will be positioned in the Administrative Data Research Centre Northern Ireland (ADRC NI), an ESRC research programme led by Dr Aideen Maguire (Director). ADRC NI is part of Administrative Data Research UK (ADR UK), which is a partnership transforming the way researchers access the UK’s wealth of public sector data, to enable better informed policy decisions that improve people’s lives.
The applicant will take the lead on projects related to ADRC NI’s recently recommissioned programme which is due to run until 31 March 2031, with a specific focus on (a) assisting the management of administrative data research in Northern Ireland’s main Trusted Research Environments, and (b) leading on research on the Environment work package detailed in the 2026-2031 ADRC NI investment. The post will involve generating environmental and social exposures related to 2 main aspects for understanding: 1) suicide risk and self harm; 2) rural health and health of farmers and farming families.
The postholder will work with a high degree of independence while operating under the strategic guidance of the ADRC NI leadership team. The applicant will take the lead on coproduced research with local stakeholders in NI, such as policy makers, practitioners and people with lived experience, to provide high quality and impactful evidence to improve knowledge, policymaking and public service delivery. They will also contribute to the strategic development of the ADRC NI and advance capacity in administrative data research in NI.
About the person:
The successful candidate must have, and your application should clearly demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:
First or Upper Second Class Honours Degree in a relevant discipline such as public health, geography, economics, urban planning. A PhD in a relevant discipline and with a substantial component of quantitative data research. Specific, recent post-doctoral research experience and skills relevant to the work of ADRC NI (e.g. population-based health and environment research or epidemiological research focused on health and environment). Substantial, recent, relevant experience working with complex health and environment-related data, ideally within the Northern Ireland context including linked administrative data, and routinely collected health, environment, and other relevant environment-related data. Substantial, recent, relevant experience of impactful coproduced quantitative health and environment data research. Experience of undertaking natural experiment evaluations using administrative data to evaluate environment-based interventions or policies. A demonstrable interest and track record of research in the area of health and environment. Experience of successful research ethics and / or governance approvals. Substantial, recent, relevant experience of using statistical packages such as STATA or R to conduct reproducible research. Experience of working in a Trusted Research Environment (TRE), ideally in the Northern Ireland context.
