As a Transportation Supervisor, you'll lead day-to-day transit operations, optimize transportation services, and drive continuous improvement efforts that enhance efficiency, safety, and customer satisfaction across Duke's transportation network. What You'll Do: Lead Transportation Operations Coordinate and oversee daily transit operations, including route scheduling, staffing assignments, vehicle deployment, and service adjustments. Monitor bus routes, track vehicle performance, and ensure service reliability through real-time operational oversight. Operate transit vehicles when necessary to support service continuity. Manage Scheduling & Staffing Develop and maintain operator schedules to ensure adequate staffing for semester routes, charter services, special events, and daily operations. Coordinate employee assignments, substitutions, overtime schedules, vacation coverage, and shift rotations. Dispatch drivers and communicate route updates, service changes, and operational notifications. Coordinate Charter Services Assist university departments and community partners in determining transportation needs and selecting appropriate vehicle services. Coordinate charter scheduling, staffing, documentation, driver preparation, and customer billing processes. Provide operators with route information, service expectations, and event-specific details. Support Vehicle Maintenance & Safety Participate in preventive maintenance planning and coordinate repairs and service appointments for university transit vehicles. Inspect vehicles to verify safety standards, operational readiness, and compliance requirements. Maintain accurate records related to inspections, incidents, accidents, and pre/post-trip documentation. Train & Develop Team Members Train and coach transportation staff on safe vehicle operations, customer service expectations, and operational procedures. Monitor employee performance and provide ongoing feedback and development opportunities. Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and service excellence. Improve Service & Operational Efficiency Analyze transportation operations, route performance, and equipment utilization to identify opportunities for improvement. Proactively recommend process enhancements, route modifications, and cost-saving initiatives. Learn and utilize transit planning and tracking software to support effective decision-making and operational oversight. Deliver Exceptional Customer Service Respond to inquiries related to transit services, bus routes, stops, schedules, and vehicle tracking information. Maintain professional communication through daily operational reports, email correspondence, and customer interactions. Serve as a resource for transportation-related questions and service concerns. Additional Responsibilities Perform other related duties as assigned in support of Duke Transportation Services operations. What You'll Bring Education Work requires the ability to provide instructions, prepare reports, coordinate the work of others, and communicate effectively, generally equivalent to a high school education. Experience Three years of transportation services experience required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong organizational and scheduling skills. Ability to coordinate multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Knowledge of transportation operations, safety procedures, and fleet management principles. Effective communication and customer service skills. Ability to train, coach, and support team members. Experience using transportation tracking, scheduling, or dispatch software preferred.
