Position Summary The Transportation Operations Lead provides hands-on leadership for transport operations and transport drivers. This role supports safe, efficient, and compliant transportation activities; assists with recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, and mentoring; completes quarterly driver evaluations; and manages permits and requirements associated with oversize and overweight loads. The position serves as a key resource on FMCSA, DOT, Hours of Service, CDL, driver qualification, and related transportation regulations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Transportation Operations & Driver Leadership Provide daily direction, coordination, and operational support for all transport activities and transport drivers. Serve as a primary point of contact for driver questions, field issues, scheduling conflicts, and operational concerns. Coordinate with dispatch, operations, construction, aggregate, asphalt, maintenance, safety, and management teams. Promote a culture of safety, accountability, professionalism, teamwork, and customer service. Support workload planning, coverage, and operational response during peak periods or changing job requirements. Hiring, Onboarding, Training & Mentoring Assist with recruiting, interviewing, and selection of qualified transport drivers. Support pre-employment coordination, new-hire onboarding, orientation, and job-specific driver training. Help develop, train, and support designated driver mentors to ensure consistent instruction and expectations. Maintain training documentation and coordinate refresher, remedial, and regulatory training as required. Coach drivers on safe work practices, equipment operation, customer service, and company procedures. Driver Evaluations & Development Complete documented driver evaluations four times per year for every transport driver. Provide timely feedback, coaching, recognition, and documented follow-up based on evaluation results. Identify training gaps and coordinate individual development or corrective training plans with management and HR. Help maintain consistent evaluation standards, records, and completion of tracking. FMCSA, DOT & Safety Compliance Maintain working knowledge of applicable FMCSA, federal DOT, state DOT, and company transportation requirements. Assist with compliance involving CDL requirements, medical certification, Hours of Service, ELD use, vehicle documentation, and driver qualification files. Monitor compliance records and expiration dates and elevate deficiencies for prompt correction. Participate in safety meetings, inspections, audits, incident reviews, accident investigations, and corrective actions as assigned. Support accurate and timely documentation required by the company and regulatory agencies. Oversize / Overweight Loads & Permit Management Manage permits and documentation required for oversize and overweight transport movements. Coordinate route requirements, travel restrictions, escort or pilot-car requirements, and permit conditions. Confirm drivers receive and understand required permits, routing, restrictions, and load-specific instructions before movement. Maintain organized permit records and stay current on applicable permitting requirements. Coordinate with agencies, customers, project teams, and internal stakeholders regarding specialized transport needs. Administrative & Continuous Improvement Maintain accurate drivers, training, evaluation, permit, compliance, and operational records. Assist with development and improvement of transportation procedures, checklists, training materials, and performance tracking. Use available transportation, telematics, ELD, and Microsoft Office systems to support reporting and follow-up. Perform other related transportation and leadership duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Five or more years of transportation, trucking, heavy-haul, construction, logistics, or closely related experience. Demonstrated lead, trainer, mentor, or supervisory experience with commercial drivers. Working knowledge of FMCSA and DOT regulations, including Hours of Service and driver qualification requirements. Experience coordinating permits or operational requirements for oversized and/or overweight loads. Valid driver license with an acceptable driving record under company policy. Ability to communicate clearly, maintain accurate records, manage competing priorities, and work effectively in office, yard, shop, and field environments. Preferred Qualifications Valid Class A CDL. Experience supporting aggregate, asphalt, construction, equipment transport, or heavy-haul operations. Experience with ELDs, telematics, dispatch, fleet management, or transportation management systems. Experience conducting documented driver observations, evaluations, coaching, and training. Familiarity with incident investigation, regulatory audits, and transportation safety programs. Frequent travel between operating locations and job sites may be required. Ability to enter and exit commercial vehicles and equipment, inspect work conditions, walk uneven surfaces, and work around active heavy equipment. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally, subject to company requirements and reasonable accommodation. Availability outside normal business hours may be required to support transportation issues, specialized moves, or urgent operational needs. Success Measures Quarterly driver evaluations completed and documented for every assigned driver. New drivers receive consistent onboarding, training, and mentor support. Permits and specialized-load requirements are accurate, organized, and available before movement. Compliance records and required credentials are monitored, and deficiencies are addressed promptly. Driver concerns and transportation issues receive timely follow-up and escalation. Safe, reliable, and professional transport services are maintained across operations.
