About this role

Fleet & Equipment Mechanic

Location: Tempe, AZ Job Type: Full-Time, Hourly Pay: $30–$40 per hour, based on experience

About the Role

Refined Gardens is looking for an experienced, highly mechanically inclined In-House Mechanic / Equipment Maintenance Technician to take ownership of the maintenance and reliability of our company fleet and equipment.

Our operation includes professional landscaping and construction crews that depend on trucks, trailers, small-engine equipment, skid steers, and a mini excavator every day. We need someone who can do more than simply perform scheduled services or replace failed parts. We are looking for a mechanic who can diagnose problems, make repairs correctly, anticipate future maintenance needs, and help us make intelligent decisions about our equipment.

This is a full-time, year-round, in-house position based at our Tempe facility.

What You'll Work On

Our fleet and equipment includes:

• Commercial small-engine equipment with both 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines

• Gasoline-powered company trucks

• Utility, enclosed, equipment, and dump trailers

• Diesel-powered skid steers and compact construction equipment

• Diesel-powered mini excavator

• Hydraulic, electrical, braking, and related equipment systems

Key Responsibilities

Diagnosis, Repair & Maintenance

• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, fuel, and operating problems rather than simply replacing parts

• Repair and maintain commercial 2-stroke and 4-stroke small-engine equipment

• Perform preventative and routine maintenance on our gasoline-powered truck fleet

• Diagnose and perform appropriate repairs on company trucks

• Inspect, maintain, and repair company trailers, including brakes, bearings, electrical systems, lighting, axles, suspension, and related components

• Maintain and repair diesel-powered skid steers, mini excavator, and other compact equipment

• Troubleshoot basic diesel, hydraulic, and electrical systems

• Perform oil changes, fluid services, filters, belts, hoses, batteries, brakes, and other routine mechanical work

• Perform basic welding and fabrication, primarily for trailer and equipment repairs

• Identify repairs that should be completed by an outside specialty vendor and coordinate appropriately

Preventative Maintenance & Equipment Readiness

• Help build, implement, and maintain a comprehensive preventative maintenance program for the company's trucks, trailers, small equipment, and heavy equipment

• Use existing company software and systems to track service intervals, inspections, maintenance history, and upcoming service requirements

• Proactively schedule maintenance to minimize downtime and avoid unnecessary equipment failures

• Maintain accurate repair and maintenance records

• Communicate equipment status and expected downtime clearly to operations leadership

Parts Inventory

• Establish and maintain an appropriate inventory of commonly used replacement and maintenance parts

• Determine appropriate minimum and reorder quantities based on equipment usage and repair history

• Keep parts inventory organized and readily available

• Identify opportunities to reduce downtime by stocking frequently needed components without unnecessarily tying up money in excess inventory

Equipment Lifecycle Management

• Monitor equipment condition, reliability, repair history, and maintenance costs

• Identify recurring equipment problems and recommend corrective action

• Provide management with honest recommendations regarding when equipment should continue to be repaired and when replacement makes more financial and operational sense

• Help evaluate equipment purchases and replacement decisions when appropriate

Shop Standards

• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop

• Maintain company tools and equipment in good working condition

• Identify additional tools or diagnostic equipment needed to perform the job effectively

• Follow appropriate safety procedures when servicing vehicles and equipment

What We're Looking For

Required

• Strong hands-on mechanical background with demonstrated diagnostic ability

• In-depth knowledge of 2-stroke and 4-stroke small engines

• Experience maintaining and repairing gasoline-powered vehicles

• Working knowledge of diesel engines and diesel-powered equipment

• Working knowledge of hydraulic systems

• Ability to troubleshoot basic electrical systems

• Experience maintaining and repairing trailers

• Basic welding and fabrication ability

• Ability to work independently, prioritize repairs, and manage multiple pieces of equipment

• Strong organizational skills and willingness to document completed maintenance and repairs

• Valid driver's license required

Preferred

• Experience with skid steers, mini excavators, or similar compact construction equipment

• Previous experience managing preventative maintenance for a fleet or equipment operation
