Job description
Northwest Children's Home is a psychiatric residential treatment facility (PRTF) serving as a step down, or diversion, from inpatient hospitalization for children with significant emotional or behavioral difficulties. Nurses work in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to seek and provide diagnostic clarity, stabilization, and reintegration into the community.
Nurses are responsible for providing safety, physical and mental/behavioral health assessments, first aid and medication administration to the youth in the program. Nurses oversee the child's medical needs throughout their stay while collaborating with outpatient service providers to assure holistic care. They also collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to assure continuity, efficient care, and discharge planning. Nurses conduct initial nursing assessments, reconcile any current medications, and provide detailed and accurate documentation assuring all requirements are met throughout their admission.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conducts nursing assessment, interventions, and treatments effectively and efficiently.
• Monitors signs and symptoms for physical and mental health stabilization.
• Conducts nursing intakes and discharges.
• Collaborates with team on disposition planning.
• Active participation in multidisciplinary team meetings.
• Monitors medications for efficacy and adverse effects.
• Collaboration with identified medical providers on medical needs.
Administrative:
• Collaborates with health care providers within the agency and community.
• Works closely with the care team to ensure the plan of care is executed and addresses any barriers to completion along with assisting in identifying solutions.
• Serves as a resource to care teams to identify goals for patients and to help with strategies to achieve those goals.
• Ensures documentation is in compliance.
• Oversight of medication cart and emergency medication supplies.
Nursing leadership/Training:
• Provides in-service education to staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with current Idaho licensure with commensurate experience in related field preferred.
• Nursing in psychiatric or pediatric inpatient unit with exposure to troubled adolescents or children.
• Specialized education or experience working with mental health patients.
• Minimum of 19 years of age.
• Valid state issued driver’s license.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States and provide verification.
• Able to pass required Background Checks.
• Within two months of hire date, completion of all required training per agency Training Policy 201.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience working with children.
• Background in health assessment skills such as doctor’s office or public health preferred.
• Specialized education or experience working with mental health patients.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
• Ability to assess and treat simple and complex psychiatric and mental health problems from adjustment disorders to serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar illness, major depression and anxiety disorders.
• Strong skills to manage, coordinate and evaluate the care and education of the client and family along the health care process.
• Ability to manage and support clients who need to be closely monitored.
• Trained to adhere to medications and therapies with complex protocols.
• Expertise in operating medical equipment & ability to be trained in required technology, processes and equipment.
• May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
• On-call duty required (must be available to work on short notice).
• Have an understanding and respect for children and their needs and the child's family and culture.
• Be physically and emotionally suited to provide services to unrelated children and the problems they present.
• Capable of performing activities related to the job.
