About this role

Company Profile CloudMargin is an award winning, growth-stage FinTech company offering an innovative Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) service. We are rapidly challenging the way financial and corporate institutions manage the collateral and risk associated with derivatives trading. We believe in offering our community an affordable, easy to deploy and scalable service.

Backed by professional investment and corporate investors, our global team works closely across product, technology and sales disciplines. Our flat structure and ethos of openness and communication means you’ll be engaged with everyone in the business and have the senior leadership team as one of your key stakeholders.

Primary Purpose of Role

CloudMargin's engineering organisation is distributed across the UK, Romania and Italy, with Romania home to a growing group of engineers across our development and platform teams. The People Lead is the senior local leader for our Romania-based engineers: responsible for their day-to-day management, growth and wellbeing, and for making

Romania a place where excellent engineers join, develop, grow and stay. Working closely with the CTO and the wider technology leadership team in the UK, you will act as the bridge between local engineers and the global organisation, ensuring that Romania-based team members have the same visibility, opportunity and support as team mates in any other location. This is a people leadership role, not a delivery management role: engineers' technical direction comes from their teams and technical leads, while you own their experience as team mates and their development as professionals.

Core Accountabilities

• People Lead CloudMargin's Romania-based engineers: regular one-to-ones, wellbeing, engagement and day-to-day support, acting as their first point of contact for anything outside their team's technical work.

• Own the performance and development cycle for engineers in Romania: goal-setting, continuous feedback, performance reviews, promotion cases and development plans, calibrated with the CTO and technology leadership so that standards and opportunities are consistent across locations.

• Partner with the CTO and technology leadership team on organisational design, succession planning and the growth of the Romania engineering group, providing an honest local view of capacity, morale and risk.

• Lead hiring for Romania-based engineering roles end to end: working with hiring leads and the recruiting team on role definition, sourcing, interviewing, onboarding, and continuously improving how we hire locally.

• Champion career progression for Romania-based engineers, ensuring access to mentoring, learning and development budgets, stretch opportunities and cross-team moves on equal terms with colleagues elsewhere.

• Handle local people matters in partnership with the People/HR function: policies, absence, workplace concerns and any formal processes, ensuring compliance with Romanian employment law and CloudMargin's values.

• Build and protect local culture: team rituals, socials and community, an effective local working environment (office or co-working arrangements), and a strong sense of connection to the wider global team.

• Act as the voice of Romania within CloudMargin's broader leadership conversations, and the voice of CloudMargin's leadership within Romania: communicating company strategy, changes and decisions clearly and honestly in both directions.

• Support distributed working across time zones, helping teams that span the UK, Romania and Italy collaborate well, and flagging early where distance is causing friction.

• Contribute to retention: understand why people stay and why they leave, run structured exit and stay conversations, and turn what you learn into action.

Experience

Essential • Significant experience (typically 5+ years) managing software engineers or other technical talent, including formal people leadership responsibility for performance and development. • Experience leading people in a distributed or multi-site organisation, working with leadership based in another country. • A track record of hiring technical talent: partnering with hiring leads and running interview processes. • Working knowledge of Romanian employment practices and law, or demonstrable ability to get up to speed quickly with local HR/legal support. • Fluent English and Romanian, written and spoken.

Desirable • A background in software engineering or another technical discipline, sufficient to hold credible career conversations with engineers without managing their technical work. • Experience in a scaling technology company or regulated environment such as FinTech or financial services. • Experience establishing or growing an engineering site or hub for an international company.

Skills • People Leadership: Builds trust quickly, listens well, and creates the conditions in which engineers do their best work; is sought out for advice and acts on what they hear. • Judgement & Discretion: Handles sensitive personal and organisational matters with care, confidentiality and sound judgement, knowing when to resolve locally and when to escalate. • Coaching & Development: Helps individuals identify strengths and gaps, set meaningful goals, and make real progress against them; comfortable having direct, kind conversations about performance. • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication in English and Romanian; able to represent local engineers to the CTO and leadership team, and company decisions back to local engineers, with equal clarity and honesty. • Cross-Cultural Collaboration: Works effectively across countries, cultures and time zones, and helps others do the same. • Organisation: Runs reliable people processes - reviews, hiring pipelines, onboarding - so that nothing important slips, without drowning the team in process. • Commercial & Organisational Awareness: Understands how a growth-stage SaaS business works and frames people decisions in terms of what the organisation needs as well as what individuals want. • AI Fluency: Uses AI tooling thoughtfully to work faster - drafting role specs, summarising feedback themes, preparing for difficult conversations - while treating generated output as a draft and keeping confidential information appropriately protected. • Integrity: Acts consistently with CloudMargin's values of openness and fairness, and builds a local culture that reflects them.
