Job Title: Design EngineerJob DescriptionThis role seeks a talented, self-motivated Mechanical Engineer to lead the design of custom automated machinery for a wide range of manufacturing industries and applications. You will own mechanical engineering responsibilities and deliverables from initial concept through detailed design, build, debug, and commissioning at customer facilities, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget while meeting technical and contractual requirements. Responsibilities • Lead the mechanical design of custom automated machinery projects from conceptual phase through final design, build, debug, and commissioning at customer sites. • Develop deeper knowledge and skills in complex machine design, including robotics, grippers, servo control, and automated machine development. • Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and methods to achieve on-time and on-budget engineering deliverables. • Work collaboratively with peers and cross-functional team members to advance project objectives and meet contractual requirements. • Participate actively in engineering review processes, providing constructive feedback on team members’ technical output. • Influence and guide team members in the maturation and refinement of mechanical designs throughout the project lifecycle. • Represent the organization professionally in client-facing design presentations and technical discussions during the engineering phase. • Communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and written form with internal teams and external stakeholders. • Work with minimal supervision, exercising sound independent judgment in engineering decisions and trade-offs. • Challenge the status quo by proposing ideas and initiatives that improve efficiency, safety, and overall workflow. • Supervise and provide technical direction to others when needed, ensuring high-quality engineering work products. • Review, critique, and help resolve common engineering problems, drawing on extensive experience and judgment. • Serve as a technical specialist within the department and act as a mentor or coach for developing engineers. • Support occasional travel, including overnight and international trips, to participate in machine commissioning and customer interactions. Essential Skills • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline, or an associate’s degree from an accredited (ABET/EAC) program combined with relevant experience. • At least 5 years of work experience as a Mechanical Engineer. • Hands-on experience in the design of custom automated machinery projects. • Strong proficiency with CAD software, preferably SolidWorks, including SolidWorks 3D modeling for mechanical and machine design. • Experience with other CAD platforms such as Creo or NX is highly valuable. • Proficient in the application of standard and advanced engineering principles, practices, and procedures to complex machine design. • Ability to supervise others and provide technical oversight on engineering tasks. • Demonstrated breadth and depth of experience to address enterprise-level engineering problems. • Ability to quickly recognize, diagnose, and resolve common engineering issues, including reviewing and critiquing others’ work. • Strong oral and written communication skills suitable for client-facing interactions and professional representation. • Capability to work independently with minimal supervision, making sound engineering and project decisions. • Experience in the automation industry is strongly preferred. • Willingness and ability to travel up to approximately 5%, including overnight and international travel. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Familiarity with robotics, robots, grippers, and servo control in the context of automated machine development and design. • Experience participating in and contributing to formal engineering review processes. • Track record of influencing design maturation and driving continuous improvement in mechanical systems. • Viewed as a technical specialist within a department, with the ability to mentor and coach developing engineers. • Engineering licensure or certification such as Engineer in Training (EIT) is desirable but not mandatory. • Demonstrated initiative in proposing efficiency, safety, and workflow improvements within engineering teams. • Comfort presenting technical concepts and design progress to customers and stakeholders. Work EnvironmentThis position operates within a professional engineering environment focused on the design and development of custom automated machinery. You will primarily work with modern CAD tools such as SolidWorks, and may also use platforms like Creo or NX to create detailed mechanical and machine designs. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is common, and work is typically office-based with periodic visits to manufacturing and customer facilities for machine build, debug, and commissioning activities. The role involves occasional travel, including overnight and international trips, to support project implementation and customer interactions. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Greenville, SC. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $40.00 - $45.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
