Main duties of the job

This is an excellent opportunity to develop your clinical skills while providing high-quality dietetic care to patients across a varied range of acute inpatient wards. Based at Darlington Memorial Hospital, you will become a valued member of a supportive and experienced team, with occasional opportunities to work across other County Durham and Darlington sites, including University Hospital of North Durham and Bishop Auckland Hospital. The role may also include experience in general dietetic clinics, offering further variety and professional development.

Our Nutrition and Dietetic Service includes specialist teams in secondary care, bariatrics, primary care, adult and paediatric diabetes, home enteral feeding and paediatrics. You will work alongside a strong professional network of Band 5, 6 and 7 Dietitians, supported by Dietetic Assistants and a central administration team, providing access to a wealth of knowledge, peer support and opportunities to grow your career.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job description Job responsibilities

This varied and rewarding role offers the opportunity to manage your own caseload, supporting patients referred by inpatient, community and secondary care professionals. You will provide person-centred dietetic care across a range of settings, including hospital wards, outpatient clinics and telephone clinics, enabling you to build broad clinical experience and make a meaningful difference to patient outcomes.

You will work closely with Dietitians and colleagues across the wider multidisciplinary team, benefiting from shared expertise, collaborative working and a supportive professional network.

As a department committed to developing the future workforce, we provide A, B and C placements for dietetic students. You will have the opportunity to contribute actively to placement planning, coordination, supervision and assessment, further developing your leadership and educational skills.

Our Nutrition and Dietetic Service brings together six specialist teams: secondary care, including nutrition support and critical care; bariatrics; primary care, including care home training; adult and paediatric diabetes; adult Home Enteral Feeding; and paediatrics, including Home Enteral Feeding and paediatric weight management.

You will join an established service comprising 49 Dietitians, one Specialist Nurse and four Dietetic Assistants, supported by a central administration team. With teams based at Darlington Memorial Hospital, University Hospital of North Durham, Bishop Auckland Hospital and Shotley Bridge Hospital, you will become part of a large, diverse service with access to extensive specialist knowledge, peer support and opportunities for continued professional development.
