Job summary
A Ophthalmology fellowship is available from February 2027 for 12 months at John Radcliffe Hospital. This fellowship is for candidates interested in medical retina.
The appointment is full time however, applications are welcome from those who wish to job share.
This post is suitable for doctors who have completed their training or have completed a significant part of their training but seek experience in medical retina prior to obtaining a consultant appointment. It is not a post that is approved for training by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Candidates are welcome to visit the department and are invited to contact Mr Jonathan Norris, Clinical Lead for Ophthalmology and Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Oxford Eye Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, The John Radcliffe.
Any person who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis, in consultation with consultant supervisors. Suitably qualified job-share candidates will be considered.
Main duties of the job
We welcome candidates who are interested in enhancing their training to include medical retina.
This post is suitable for ophthalmologists who have completed their training (to CCT level) or have completed a significant part of their training including postgraduate examinations but seek experience in the above ophthalmology subspecialties prior to obtaining a consultant appointment. It is not an approved training post.
The post holder will have the opportunity to work within a dynamic team of medical retina specialists with subspecialist interests ranging from uveitis, paediatric uveitis, vascular medical retina, AMD, ocular genetics, specialist retina, ocular oncology and von hippel lindau. We are also a national centre for neuromyelitis optica and neurofibromatosis type 2.
We participate in a multidisciplinary service for our regional Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis service. Medical Ophthalmology is a cross-disciplinary service and we encourage participation of our trainees in rheumatology, sarcoidosis, vasculitis and multiple sclerosis clinics to deepen knowledge of the conditions giving rise to uveitis.
About us
he Oxford Eye Hospital and its consultant body has an active research portfolio. Participation in research through the writing up of clinical studies and case reports is encouraged. The Medical Retina Consultants are also part of the cataract surgical team. Fellows have the opportunity to access cataract surgery but only during weekend lists, there is no weekday theatre allocation within this Fellowship. There is also the opportunity to be involved in trainee, and medical student teaching on a formal and informal basis.

The postholders duties will be primarily at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford but their presence may from time to time be required in other parts of the Trust, such as in Wantage or Banbury. In addition to gaining experience in managing common medical retina conditions such as AMD and retinal vascular disorders, the fellowship includes sub-specialty training in inherited retinal diseases, uveitis, and other rare retinal diseases

Person Specification
Qualifications/Training Essential
GMC - Registered with a Licence to Practice Medical degree General training in ophthalmology to specialist level or equivalent with medical retina experience
Experience Essential
Demonstrate ability to conduct clinical and operative care in ophthalmology Demonstrate special expertise in the areas of sub-specialty of medical retina Higher specialist training in ophthalmology or equivalent Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees Experience of routine clinical audit
Skills and Knowledge Essential
Ability to organise and manage clinical workload To undertake effectively the role of clinical fellow in a large teaching hospital. Ability to communicate effectively through good verbal and written skills Evidence of ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels skills should be highly developed.
