HVAC Mechanic II
Position Description: Performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of heating and air-conditioning systems to ensure that a comfortable environment is maintained at all times. The scope of responsibility also includes repair and maintenance of all refrigeration equipment located within the facility, and the performance of preventive maintenance in each of the previously mentioned areas on an established periodic basis. May lead and manage installation, repair, or replacement of HVAC components or systems. Includes all aspects and responsibilities of the HVAC Mechanic trade.

Major/Essential Functions: • Installs, repairs, and maintains large commercial and industrial ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning (AC), and cooling systems with complex problems and extensive repairs. Installs AC units used to condition the air in warehouses, shops, clinics, educational and large office buildings including areas that have special requirements such as communication centers, computer rooms, operating rooms, laboratories, and other areas with sensitive equipment. • Installs, modifies, overhauls, repairs, and maintains a variety of complex heating boilers and/or heating systems, single and multiple fuel power boilers, and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment. • Prepare and submit detailed HVAC/R work documentation, including work order completion, system modifications (e.g., control settings, equipment configurations, refrigeration logs), and updates to system records or directories. • Updates and maintains as-built HVAC/R construction information in schematic drawings. • Install and maintain HVAC/R systems and related equipment, including air handlers, control valves, thermostats, ductwork, refrigeration units, condensate pumps, water heaters, backflow preventers, and system controls; perform associated work such as sealing, insulating, and mounting components to meet code and performance standards. • Performs all preventive maintenance tasks on time on assigned systems and equipment. • Performs essential electrical work incidental to the maintenance and operation of HVAC/R systems. • Responds to work related service calls on a timely and efficient manner. • Responsible for keeping all work areas, equipment and tools clean and in excellent working conditions. • Responds to emergency calls and/or performs scheduled work after hours, weekends and holidays as required. Work and service calls shall be resolved in a timely and efficient manner. • Performs preventive maintenance on HVAC/R systems and equipment. Inspects and calibrates controls and gauges. • Actively participates and completes training, personal development and continuing education. • Must have and maintain valid State of Texas Driver's License and be listed as an approved driver as determined by Risk Management and insurance carrier. Able to pass the employee Criminal Background Check. • Remains current with all licensures, certifications and mandatory compliances and trainings required of this position. • Adhere to all policies, procedures, and practices (Regents Rules, TTUS, HSCEP OPs, etc.). • In accordance with Texas Executive Order GA-48 and applicable state or federal law, this position may involve access to, work on, or conducting research involving critical infrastructure as defined by Texas Business & Commerce Code §117.001(2) (formerly Texas Business & Commerce Code § 113.001(2)). Required Qualifications: • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. May be required to maintain registrations, professional licenses and/or certifications required to perform the duties of the position from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation or other state and four (4) years of experience as a licensed heating and air-conditioning mechanic or heating and air-conditioning and job-related experience.
Preferred Qualifications: • Two years of heating and air-conditioning experience. • May be required to maintain registrations, professional licenses and/or certifications to perform the duties of the position from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation or other state; willing to pursue additional certifications if necessary.
